And the advice with towing that I received? run the Prado with 55 psi in the back, 46 in the front and the 8ply dual axle tyres on the van at 60psi! (Previously 35)
Now I am sure that there will be people out there saying I'm nuts but so far very happy, can't wait to see what it does on Petrol..
All for now from Sunny Perth

Its amazing what the difference is when pressures are increased by even a small amount- 7 psi doesn't sound like much but obviously makes a huge difference in other areas. I too run mine around the 42 psi all round and am very happy with the 13.5 to 14 L/100 . Towing, i managed with my 2 tonne van 18 L/100 Km, travelling at 90 - 100 km/h

      Sadness is upon me.........
have no idea what has happened but the old girl has gone back to old self, fuel economy is back to where it was...bloody terrible!
there has to be a Gremlin somewhere in the engine that is screaming to get out, how come it was good for just one trip and now
loving the attention at the Bowser?
I give up and she will get sold back in Melbourne!

I just come back from a trip from Newcastle to Surfers Paradise and back in the Prado. The car was loaded with 6 people plus packed with loads of gear; I even had stuff in milk crates and stacked on top of each other(3)!

On the trip from Newcastle to Port Macquarie, I got 11.1L/100km

On the way home I reset the trip computer at surfers, drove to Coffs Harbour, spent a night there and checked out the sights, then drove to Newcastle stopping again at Port Macquarie. When I got home the computer was 11.4. I don't know how that compares but I was pretty happy with that.
It's not a lie, if you believe it.

          Good one
amazing figures but if I used my trip computer(which does not relate to actual usage at the pumps) then I too would be very happy but the computer is miles out so to speak

            Bummer....

I worked out the figures using kms traveled and litres used, and it works out about 1.4L/100kms out.

Well the trip computer has to show something when stationary!

Theoretically if you are not moving, you are doing an infinite number of litres per 100 ks, so it just shows 99.9 to indicate the reading is not valid at that point. Only if you have a Litres/hr reading, will you see how much the car is consuming when stationary.

Steve, went for a 600km trip on the weekend and on the trip there Scangauge reported 12.2L/100K, back was 13.something which included some running around town.

                  Gday fellas,

If anyone is still interested in this thread, I got some good fuel data out of my 04 Petrol Prado (134,000kms). I just drove from Wagga wagga to Katherine over the course of a couple of weeks. Did a total of 5800 Kms, spent $1000 in fuel.

The fuel guage would generally swap over around the 700 km mark.

The best fuel use I got was when I hit port macquarie 12.1 lts / 100 kms

And it would slowly rise the further north I got. The last leg from Camooweal to Katherine was 12.5 lts / 100

This is all highway driving doing 100-110 kph. I get around 15 lts / 100 around town from memory.

So im fairly happy with this, my fuel usage isnt much different to the BA Ute I traded in for the Prado considering the prado has half a ton extra weight.

                  Cheers!

I'd dream of stats like that too. I just got my best ever result for a tank out of the prado - 15.5L/100 - almost exactly 50/50 highway/city. It managed 500km before it switched tanks, previously 420km was the best I got before it changed tanks. Maybe cleaning the MAF sensor about 2000km ago is finally starting to pay dividends.

                        G'day,

I just completed my first trip in my 07 GXL V6 Manual. Over 1000Kms towing my boat I used between 26 and 29 L/100km. This was doing 100Km p/h on the cruise control. The boat weighs around 2300kg and we also had my roof tent and box on the roof and four people in the car. This figure was obtained on LPG, I have JTG Liquid Injected Gas.

                        Cheers

                        • Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

Towing anything really seems to be the killer to fuel consumption. Combine that with any sort of roofrack or roofbars, and result is woeful!

I've just got 11.0L/100km for my petrol manual 2008 GXL for 350km mostly highway usage, half loaded with 2 adults & 2 kids. And it is raised. However no other accessories, not towing anything, and standard issue tyres: (Grandtreks)

Note that increasing a tyre's diameter does not automatically mean worse fuel consumption: it is just like getting a slightly higher gear ratio, which for highway use probably helps more than hinders better consumption.

The main effect on consumption from after-market tyres is the rolling resistance. This is due to a combination of the tread design, and number of plies. If the tyre has more plies then it is more puncture-resistant, but is also harder for the car to "squash" each revolution it makes with the road. The mud terrain tyre tread might make you look tough, but it also create major resistance when rolling on bitumen (or gravel).

If you can hear your tyres "whine" then that is the sound of your fuel being used to vibrate the air around each tread block, when it could be better used to make the car go forward!

                          Cheers,
                          Rob.

Just got back from Coffs Harbour on Friday( And also Port Macquarie) and i averaged 22 L/100 km. This is with my roof rack, with bikes on top and caravan spare tyre also up there and van weighs 1900 kg. I travelled between 95 and 110, depending on road and weather conditions and we got the unfortunate add on of hi strength winds, both cross and head winds. Was an interesting drive, but none the less, by not pushing it, i got what i thought was a very reasonable figure.
When doing the day tours, i got down to 15.8 to 16.5, depending once again on the winds, but i wasn't kind to the skinny pedal as i was enjoying the freedom of no van
                            Cheers

Hey guys I just got back last night from a 2 week trip to Fraser Island and back (Sydney) and quite surprised how good the car ran. Had 2 Adults and 2 kids 110lt esky choockers full, the back loaded up and the roof rack loaded with Camping gear maxtraxs and recovery gear. Car was pretty full without overloading the back too much.

2003 Prado Grade with 4l Petrol V6 and 4spd Auto only mod at the moment is BFG 275x65x17 tyres

Total km traved 3460km of which 2520 was Freeway and the rest was mainly Driving on Fraser Island (probably about 900km) with the odd drive at Mt Warning/Beerwah/Crowdy Head (100km) Nothing wrong with my Maths

Drive up to Inskip Pt saw average of 12.4l per 100km and I didn't reset the meter but when we arrive back last night the average was 15.0l per 100km roughly spent about $700 on fuel total and Fuel on Fraser was $1.84 put in a total of $250 while on the Island. Did a lot of mixed beach and track driving and had a ball as the was a lot of flooded tracks from the rain each night but the days where mainly overcast with the odd shower.

                              Cheers
