  • Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

    Interesting debate guys. Can I get some tips please? While I haven't yet done a super accurate calculation, I ran my two tanks down until the light came on and the needle dipped below the last line on the gauge - very disappointed to see I had only travelled 795klms. At a guess I'd say I'm getting 20l/100klm. I have an '06 GXL V6 petrol. Most of this was city commuting in stop/start traffic so I'm hoping that's what the problem is. Engine runs beautifully and I changed the spark plugs about a month ago. Now running Bosch Platinum. Anyone else experiencing similar poor figures? Any tips??

      :arrow: just did some fuel sums... my v6 6spd got

      19.5l/100km towing mostly...still got 1/4ish on the gauge LAST TANK ???
      used 310L of 95RON. and 1 bottle of octane booster for the 1611 kms so far

      will follow suit and look into MAF sensor only

        Chuck it and get the diesel.

          Refilled my Prado GLX auto this arvo.

          Was running a mix of 95/98 Ron BP fuel. About 500 km highway work, other 477 km all start/stop around town and too and from work.

          Distance = 977.5 Km
          Fuel burned = 144.5 Litres
          Average speed = 55 kph

          Equals = 14.78 L/100km

          Comes down alot, to how you drive. My car has the aerodynamics of a house brick....

            Get in there and clean the MAF sensor (see other threads).
            This alone improved my city consumption from 14l/100km to 12.9 for identical trips...

              Had my v6, 3 years today.
              Lease company keeps track and is at 13.18ltrs/100klms over life of vehicle.
              Pretty balanced city/country driving, not nearly enough 4wd action.

                  ive only relied on the fuel computer and the figures it gives dont add up . ive just put new tyres on the car and according to the computer i have lost 110 ks per tank around town . i am currently re-evaluating my over optimistic mileage figures . it appears my baby has been lying and hiding her drinking habit from me. sneaking in extra nips from the petrol cabinet . i may have to give her a good thrashing for this deceitfulness. :shock:

                    Old fuel consumption was between 18 & 20 ltrs round town and 14 on the hwy. After I changed my diff gears from 3.73 to 4.56 I now get 9 on the hwy and 11 around town :mrgreen:

                    Heading up to Fraser at Easter so will have some figures on the sand + fully loaded vehicle soon.

                      Latest news
                      just drove from Melbourne to Broome via Alice Springs, and Katherine exactly 5000k's towing a Aussie Swag camper trailer and a fully loaded vehicle including roof rack.
                      Stats....used 1019 litres of fuel mainly LPG(about 10 % Petrol)
                      Cost $1068 cheapest gas 52 cents in Melbourne, most expensive 143 cents in NT
                      Kept at speed limits all the way, except in NT where I was travelling at 120 to 125 kph, occasionally hitting the max speed limit of 130 kph
                      My figures tell me my average fuel consumption was 22.1 litres per 100 k's, but most importantly was the actual cost per kilometre which was 21 cents.
                      This trip I did not think about fuel consumption as I had to get to Broome in a week, which I did including 2 days in Alice, had planned to do the Tanami which would have saved 1000 k's but all the roads up this way are mainly closed due to flooding, so the long way was the way it had to be.
                      fuel prices in Broome currently is $1.04 gas $1.64 unleaded and $1.69 Diesel.
                      cheers Stevo

                        • Melb to Ouyen sitting on the limit (110) towing a 16tf expanda type van. over 30/100 on petrol. Lucky Ouyen had fuel or our desert trip was going to begin with an epic fail. Even on the return trip -200lts of water (and a fair bit of beer) and sitting on 100kmh it didnt make a huge difference returning 28l per 100. I was thinking of going gas but after seeing my mates 200's at work ,might need to upgrade. either a oil burner 120 or bite the bullet and go a 200. the v6 120 is just nasty when towing.

                          • Last month we bought a 2004 GXL 4.0L V6 petrol 5 speed manual. First tank of fuel through it since we've owned it we got 1200km from 160L, which equates to 13.3L per 100km. Very happy with that figure. Coming from a 2004 petrol Falcon that used about the same, glad we didn't spend the extra money to buy a turbo diesel purely for its fuel economy. That was all town driving, with two trips on the beach (about 50km).

                              FBTSUX, might be dearer to buy, but don't forget, you get that money back when you resell. So there's not really any price difference in purchasing a diesel vs petrol!
