  • Hi there Phillo I have managed on 3 trips 11.6L per 100 twice and one at 11.8L per 100, loaded with 3 on board but is stock standard except the bullbar, still running the grandtreck tyres on 40psi, pretty happy with that, this is going up north from Sydney to family........Cheers Steve

    • Hi Steve,

Did you say somewhere that you are running 98RON or just straight unleaded ? Don't think I would get close to that with the 4 speed auto. Closer to the 14.5-15.5l/100 mark. I also do what I would consider trips to and from work that should be good for economy (mostly 80-100 km/h zones with not too much stop/start). I was going to ask you about the tyres but you have mentioned it anyway. I would suspect that the Grandtrecks would be good for economy hence why Toyota use them. Am going to start the 98RON experiment on mine and run this (along with the LPG) for at least 5000km to see if economy improves. Jurgs

      • Na mate just normal unleaded. I never use E10 crap (never have) and have only used 95 or 98 when normal unleaded is not available. Those figures I posted are freeway driving and slight bit of running into town and back (normally 60k speed zone). Last check for city driving around town and a bit of M4 (freeway) was around 15/16L per 100. I keep the grandtrecks up around 40psi. Im sure thoese figures would be different (worse) if I was running say bf's A/t's. Thats why I have a second set of rims for off road tyres. Cheers Steve

        • Thanks Steve. Sounds like mine is not too much worse then. Just filled up the gas again today and used 16 litres/100. At 53c a litre I am not complaining. Economy has been improving with every tank fill for some reason. Have also got STD road tyres at 42psi. Jurgs

          • Mate gotta be happy with that. I had gas on the old 90 but it was the old venturi system and I didnt like it. I would imagine the newer system like yours would be a lot more advanced.......Cheers steve

new air filter didnt do any thing.. always run 98 .. just bought a set of denso iridium power plus ( IKH20 ) plugs from the states, and got a new fuel filter in the mail too... up for a 5k oil / filter change will do all at once and see if it makes a difference... just had the cpu checked and all good with that... still researching headers.. but will put another 5k on the prado to see how the new plugs go ... will post later if any noticeable change... cheers butane

                • On a recent trip (about 5800km), my best figure was 13.8l/100km and worst was around 14.9l/100km.

Load included me and 3 passengers, boot stacked to ceiling with camping gear and luggage, roof luggage box and tent poles on top.

I have an ARB bar, 2" lift, snorkel and Bridgestone D694LT tyres @ 39psi.

I drove with a light foot most of the time. Still got palpitations and sweats every time I pulled into a servo!

                  • ""Still got palpitations and sweats every time I pulled into a servo!"" LOL, mate thats not that bad for a V6 over 2T full house and stuff on the roof. Even a diesel D4D I reckon you would be seeing 11/12's so for a couple of Litres extra pfff wouldn't stress over that. Same as towing, you will see 20's or more if working it hard and headwinds you will see mid 20's but thats at its worst. Try 22/24L per around town for an 80 or 100 series petrol, then Id be freakn having to fill up lol. My uncle use to see mid to high 20's pulling his van behind his 80 petrol auto and that was constant. Luckily he wasnt short of a $$ but did get and still has his 100 series turbo diesel which is roughly 10L less per 100 so hes happy..Just think if your fuel pump shits its self you wont be up for 5k+ or unfortunately like a member on here who's D4D has just gone bang due to two shitty injectors at under 80k....Luckily for him its under warranty but still a pain in the arse for him and had he not had warranty, well Id hate to think of the $$$ to replace it. It might hert a bit more at the pump with a petrol but it all works out in the wash as they say at then end of the day......If it gets to $2 a litre then my 120 will be worth shit and the diesels will still be bringing good $$$ lol.............Cheers Steve

                    • The stress was caused more by the fuel prices in some of the outback servos! By one of the permutations of Murphy's Law, petrol pricing was at a peak while we traveled. In Hughenden, I think I paid $1.77/litre

                      • How much was the diesel ?? Neighbours who live next to my wife's grand parents just got home last week from a trip through the middle and up top (not sure exactly where they went) but he said in one spot they had run totally out of diesel and only selling unleaded (he has a 100 series 4.5 petrol) He said people were sleeping and waiting for the next delivery to continue on (must find out exactly where he was talking about) would be a pain in the arse to be in that position............Cheers Steve

                        • Don't remember the price of diesel. Not everywhere had it, though. Some places only had 91 ULP. We toured through central western QLD, up as far as Richmond then over to Townsville and back south on the Bruce Highway. The capacity of the fuel tank meant we were less reliant on fuel stops in 1-person localities. Paul

                          • Hey guys, though id chuck my 20 cents in, got a 2004 V6 4spd auto.
Most recent trip up north with me, the missus, 3 kids and a full boot sitting on around 110-115kph got 1450km out of both tanks so around 12.5lt per 100 running regular. next trip will try the higher octane but my previous car a 1997 ford fairmont ran a way better on regular than premium???
