    Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

I dream of figures like that!!!
I am travelling From Melbourne To Darwin, loaded car with roof rack and towing a Jayco 17 foot poptop
towing at consistant 90 kph, tyres at 38psi Petrol and car regually serviced.....23/24 litres per 100 , ....Gas 27/30 litres per 100 (prices range between 94 and 116 cents per litre) Diesel at Katherine right now is 136 cents
When the Van comes off the figures are 18/20 on Petrol and 22/24 on Gas,
So Guys are some of you really telling the truth or am I the only one with these horrible figures??
    any help much appreciated

I have never had a Prado, but my 80S 4.5 and GQ 4.2 both petrol manual, when not towing would do much better than your non towing figures, I only ever towed my small car trailer with the GQ with a light load on it perhaps all up 7-800kg, and I only did about 17L/100km highway driving and that is at 110km/h, I never drive at less than the speed limit as a minimum, I'm not patient enough to do 90-100km/h in a 110km/h zone. The 4.0L in the Prado by all accounts is somewhat more fuel efficient than either the 80s o the GQ

        Hi Stevo,
I would worry about your figures - they are very high. I posted a few months ago by commenting on a caravan trip:-
"This year did an 8 week trip towing an 18ft pop top van. Weight approx 2t. Did 8,500 km & this would involve towing for around 6,000 km. Mine is petrol & average consumption was 16.6 km per 100 km. Very happy with this figure as we did some low range 4WDriving as well" This trip also involved some mountain work over the Snowy Mountains.

My V6 has now done 32,000 kms & the overall average consumption is 14.99 litres per 100km. I have kept a spreadsheet since new. When home it is almost all short trips in Newcastle & the above figures have included several caravan trips.

G'day Stevo! Hope you are enjoying your trip - sounds like a great adventure . But that fuel consumption does sound high. We had high gas consumption on our recent trip to the Snowies. Upon inspection, the injectors were found to be faulty and replaced under warranty. Gas consumption is now a fairly constant 19.5l/100, town driving with a heavy foot and somewhere around 15/16 on gas on the highway. Petrol is 13.3l/100 @100k and around 13.7 @110 - fully loaded but no roof rack. Just a thought; I wonder how much your roof rack and tyres are adding to the consumption :?:

Anyway, hope to catch up with you when you pass through this way.

          Regards

          Bear

            Hi Bear
            tried everything but suicide!!!
the fuel cost are killing me!!! Saw 138 cents a litre for gas in the Territory yesterday!!! Petrol was almost the same price, anyone wanting to come up north buy a diesel!!!
fuel consumption has been as High as 30/31 litres on gas and consistantly on 25 lp 100 on petrol!! have a total range of about 560 on both tanks, nearly ran out at Kununurra, had to use a Jerry can.
Will be in Broome soon and going to have this car checked out big time, Cleaned the Maf the other day, no difference.
Just wondering now if the gearbox may be slipping(Auto) very hard to keep engine on consistant revs (not using Cruise control) sitting on 85 /90 revs are as low as 1600 but jumps up to 2550 all the time( even on dead flat roads), on cruise will jump from 1600 to 3500, so cruise is out now as I have tried every way to drive this bloody thing!!
I am very frustrated, hope someone can fix soon
            cheers Stevo

Steve, the gearbox issue alone sounds like it is not good, not mention your fuel consumption, i would be getting that checked ASAP.

                Re: Fuel Consumption V6 Engine

It sounds like your fuel consumption is what is usually experienced in the 4.0 when doing the toughest off road work in low range.

There is without doubt something wrong.

Hey Stevo, that sure does sound annoying and the change in revs does seem very odd - to say the least! Hopefully you can find a good mechanic with a reasonable cost fix. I guess you budgeted a few dollars for repairs and the unexpected - just a pity its come so soon. Do please keep us posted mate, and good luck with it.

                  Cheers

Gee Stevo that sucks....that's the last thing you want when you are on a holiday is car troubles....but interesting that the price of gas is that high.....I think you are right on the diesel ,there is no-way you can save money with those type of prices. Hope your luck changes on the car front and it hasn't stop you all having a good time

Those figures looks about right to me- Travelling fully loaded with roof rack and modified cars - 2" lift, bulbar, dual batteries/etc going 110 km/hour - fuel consumption
is around 18L per 100 km, add to that camper trailer, going hard 110 on cruise againt the wind the fuel economy on LPG is around 31 litre per 100km...
This is the figures I am getting...

Just got the car back from local Toyota dealer, and guess what? theres nothing wrong !!! can't find any faults at all, gear box ok, engine ok, nothing shown on computer, had the normal 120,000 km service, that hurts the wallet!!!
Went for a good drive, some soft sand on the beach, dirt roads and plenty of bitumen, have not filled up yet but the fuel guage is telling me nothing has improved,
looked at the local Toyota showroom and prices here WOW!!! stock model GXL TD $58,000 plus orc and all the extras I have another $7000 or $8000 !!!!
think I'll keep paying 99 cents plus for gas
                          cheers Stevo
