  • If you have a look at the power curves quoted by extractor manufacturer, you will see a power gain higher in the rev range but they don't
usually show results below about 2500-3000 rpm because there is a usually a loss in power.
Extractors have less back pressure and move the power band of the engine further up the rev range, which is good for people who
drive on the redline but not so good for people who drive around between 1500-3000rpm.
This is a very complex subject but do a google search on "exhaust back pressure" and you will get a lot of info.

As for the higher fuel use I am guessing that the extractors created a leaner fuel mixture and the computer compensated for this and increased the amount of fuel injected.

      • i normally run at low 14s but recently seen it steadily climb and climb even up into high 17s which was starting to get worrying. So this time i put around 100 lts of Premium (from shell) in it two days ago and today i filled up rest with 7-11 unleaded (not e10 crap) and took it for a run with a full 180 litres on board down freeway doing about 105 - 115 km/hr for about total of 50kms which saw it come down and down as low as 10.8 until i came off freeway which was very pleasing to see. with another 5-10 kms traffic until home it now is sitting on 11.5. interestingly the grande computer doodah says i averaged 78.2km/hr so the bit before and after the freeway brought the average speed down.

so i guess it may have been some bad fuel or maybe it needed some premium running through it? i really dont know. cleaning maf, filters etc or even a full service changing everything has done nothing before to drop my economy figures so now i dont even bother checking that. i actually normally see it rise after a service for some reason, so if its sitting in the early 14s i am normally happy with that

prado has done 78000kms and i have loaded drawers, fridge, steel bar/ipfs, dual batts - a brand new one today replaced under wty - so not travelling too light and i do have a not so light right foot and usually little patience. i did notice i need 4 wheel balances and wheel alignment whilst out on open road and also got some brake shudder/pulsating at lowish speed braking too, so looks like more cash going out of the pocket before our upcoming christmas trip

we all look at number of kms travelled but does anyone ever take note of their average speed between refills? i have sometimes been as low as low 20 to 25km/hr as an average so i guess that will determine what the economy rate will be for that refill. nothing like traffic congestion and short trips to eat away more fuel

        • We've owned our 2008 Prado for 3 months now and we are getting 14L/100km consistantly.
I've just filled up Premium 98 to see if we get any improvement. But with the 20 cents per litre price difference from 98 to 91 we will have to get around 12L/100km to be cost effetive. Not confident.

          • Just managed 12.5L/100km out of mine - Premium 98 Unleaded. Loaded with Lg Rhino roof cage with stuff in it, full cargo area incl 50lt fridge and aux batt, 2 adults 1 6YO child & 2 beagles. Did 1050km sitting on the speed limit and not sparing the horses when overtaking.

Around town on e10 I normally get about 14.5 to 15.

Pretty happy with the open road result given the load we were carrying and that the car now has 143k on the clock.

            • I was chatting with friend the other day who has a 100 series cruiser, he was saying that when he read somewhere that his V8 petrol "detects" the octane level of the fuel and slowly over time (he seemed to think a couple of tanks worth) advances the timing which obviously has an effect on among other things economy. Having tried a tank of 95 recently and found no real difference either to power or economy, can anyone comment if the prado petrol does the same? Ie should I be waiting for a tank or 2 to go through before I write off using the 95. Keeping in mind a) the fuel price here in Tassie is higher than mainland prices and b) 95 isn't all that common locally for me, plenty of 98 or 92, just not 95.

              Cheers

              • It will take a few tanks to adjust. Been there done that and still get the best bang for the buck from BP 91 unleaded.

                • Thanks Hutch, figured that would be the case. I am getting around 16s purely around town on the 91, (Have some leg stretching planned in the next few weeks which will be interesting to see) which I think is a little high for an bog standard setup, and I have a pretty light foot. Have cleaned MAF, will try a new set of plugs as they are nearing due for replacement but not confident of a big drop from them.

                  • Hi Rod you will be lucky to do any better maybe 15's. This seems to be the norm for the V6. Thats the problem I reckon with most of us. We want the extra power and get up and go from the V6 but want the fuel figures of the d4d lol... D4D are running around the 11's round town full of gear and low 8's on the open road, will never come close to that with the V6. The best I got so far with the 120V6 is 11.6L per 100 freeway and around town is round the 15/16 driving sedately, give it the boot and it will climb quit quickly. The only extra weight Im carrying (besides my stomach) is the alloy factory bullbar, no off road tyres or lift or anything yet.....Might get down to 14's if I lose the extra 30kg I need to lose.. Cheers Steve

EFI systems monitor all operating conditions of the engine and continually adjust the fuel going into the combustion chamber in an attempt to get the ultimate air/fuel ratio for the present load. Ideally this around 14:1 (stoichiometric level). Your engine management system makes thousands of calculations per minute as your revs/speed/braking/idling etc change as your drive. Octane level of the fuel is more related to emissions control and drivability than it is to fuel consumption.

                      • Hi Guys,

I'm running a 2 inch lift, cooper st's 265/70/17, snorkel, ARB deluxe steel bar and I am getting mid 14's city driving and I dont mind putting the foot down either. Highway driving I get around the 11 mark but once I am travelling 110km/h+ consumption really starts to increase 115km/h gets about 14.5 to 15km per 100. I am using BP 98RON and you can tell there is a definite power increase. I clean the MAF sensor every 5000km or so and also swap the air filter around every 20 to 30,000km.

                        Regards
                        Doug

                          • I towed a fairly heavy soft floor CT from Sydney to Narooma and back for Christmas hols and avg'd 17.6L/100 from the scangauge. I wasn't driving Miss Daisy and I wasn't hanging around either. The car has a steel winch bar and BFG's and was on Caltex 95.

                            • We have been getting low 14l/100km around town and on a 900km round trip up the Pacific Hwy we got 12l/100km last week. That was doing 120km in the 110km zones. Everyhting standard on the car with 200kg pay load. We love it.

                              • Hello all,
I have a 2007 Prado, with dual tanks. It has a 2" lift, 2 large lights on a light bar and running 265/70/17 BFG rugged trail tyres (not as aggressive as the BFG T/A) Most of my driving since owning this car has been 70% highway at 120km/h - 100km/h and remaining around town, with very little sitting in traffic and crawling. My trip computer average is 13//100km and I do read the highway figures as well once in while and see high 10's and low 14's when going up a small bridge or gradient.

I also log the litres/trip computer kilometers into a phone app, and have an average of 13l/100k to 14/100k since August 2011.

I did recently wreck my gearbox, and had it rebuilt, noticed that the oil/filter change that had to be done during the rebuild has lowered the average fuel consumption. Although the gearbox fluid has a 100,000km life, it would be beneficial to change earlier to reduce the friction, and our conditions here does break the lubricants faster than in Japan.
