  • Petrol Filling.

    Hi,

I've owned Prados for over 10 years now and because of the cost of filling 180 ltrs I am in the habit of topping up my tanks every week instead of running them down to nearly empty, I realise I could save a few dollars buy running the tanks low then filling them up at the right time-price, my question is...is my way of topping up my tanks every week bad for my engine etc?

    Cheers, Glen....C'mon Parra Eels!!

I wouldn't think so but you are carrying more fuel therefore more weight so heavier car equals higher fuel usage.
Having said that I always fill to the top every fill but I do between 400 and 900 k's a week and the 159lt of the 90 series allows me to fill up at the best time.
    Cheers, Leon

Cheers, I mighta worded that wrong...beer...s'pose I was wondering if the fuel in the subtank might just sit there and go bad?? Or do the main tank and sub tank mix together? Vino now...must stop posting....

        Glen.

Tanks in the 120 are constantly circulating, so no, your fuel won't go stale.

          Have a vino for me.

evan with with the price of 98.. i still get ripped off

constantly ,, chasing fuel economy in my V6..

hate ethanol with a passion and any form of blending... so i pay big bucks.. for 98 ron per/ltr.
thinking i'm looking after my rig.. yesterday my mate tells me the 7 eleven servo i use for this 98 , has a small sticker under the
the pump keeper " contains 10% ethanol "

I have had "zero" issue's regarding the use of the fuel, i use it in my mowers, whipper sniper, chainsaw,, dirtbikes...
but it doesnt change the fact that i pay the same price for the shell v power etc.. and the content labelling is done so sneeky

thats a big " NOT HAPPY JAN. "

I nearlly blew up my 70 hp yamaha on my fishing boat.. because of ethanol content and the lack of labelling at the bowser.. at another private servo

that alone cost me about $700 for a engine strip and rebuild..

I will be taking this up with the attendant first, then the management of the servo if this confirmed when i go and have a look today.... take a photo or too...

So i guess the moral of the story is... you never know what your getting anyway
maybe after i go to shell or caltex my prado might start dialling in those distance numbers i've been chasing

              cheers butane

This. The whitepapers might say the petrols are guaranteed to be a certain makeup but at the end of the day you're still at the mercy of a string of players in the fuel supply chain. I'd tar all of them with the same brush as I would used car salesmen and real estate agents.

I fill up using different brands of servo each time and I try to fill before it gets below half. At least that way any bad fuel gets diluted any time you fill and it helps stop any scum at the bottom of my car's tank getting sucked up. Sure it means it takes much longer to get rid of any dirty fuel, but by my own experience and reckoning, it's safer.

In my 8 years owning a petrol 120 V6 auto, it drank ALOT.

If you want to enjoy trouble free motoring, just use 95RON from a NAME BRAND SERVO with high fuel turn over. Never use ethanol shit in the Prado engine, they don't like it. If you start modifying the engine etc, switch to 98RON.

Plain and simple, brands like Shell and BP never caused an issue in 140,000 Kms....

I think I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I'm on my second 120 V6, both run exclusively on Caltex E10 blend. My first 03 V6 did 257,000ks when I traded it to my current 09 V6 which has just ticked over 120,000ks. In 9 years of owning V6's, I've never had one fuel related problem running exclusively on E10. ( except for a service tech not putting the fuel line back on properly )

Yep agree Bazza, 120000 in 120 on shell/ BP E10, 15000 so far in the 150.
                      No issues what so ever.

Got a mate who works on servo pumps and tanks and he tells everyone don't use the e10 for a number of reasons.

And V6's do drink alot and cost more to register.

For the sake of 2c a litre difference over the normal unleaded I wont be putting that crap in any of my cars. Hutch have you actually done a fuel usage comparison between the two. I have on the wifes car and lost 50k from tank, I reckon id lose double (100k) in the prado. I will get my mate who works for holden to take some pics of the stuffed injectors he replaces quite commonly on commodores, eaten away from E10 and some fuel lines. It eats from inside out. Now this is only what I have heard not seen. I have read tow fuel comparison tests within the last week and the normal unleaded come out on top, this was including cost per litre, extra fuel the vehicle used, same distance traveled, and the test was done using E10, unleaded, 95 and 98 and straight ethanol. I'm sure it was in the telegraph paper and I did read it in a 4wd magazine as well..........Each to their own but I will never use it unless there is no other choice then I would use 95 or 98 before I use E10............Cheers Steve

""nd V6's do drink alot and cost more to register."" not sure about in QLD but no difference here in Sydney in regards to rego, doesnt matter what engine its the weight of the vehicle and the prado's are all in the same category..........Cheers Steve
