Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

    Stevo,

I feel your pain also. I have an 06 dual fuel and am in the same boat as you. 64 lt of lpg and I am getting about 250klm to a tank around town. I have just had my Toyota trained mechanic do a major service on it, inc plugs, oils, filters, clean MAP sensor etc etc. I think I worked out my consumption to be about 22 - 24lt per 100klm. And that is my wife driving it not me, and she isn't a heavy right footer at all.

I am a little lost for words as originally I was getting about 320klm to a tank of gas, but have gradually seen it diminish over the last 12 - 18 months. The weird thing was last Xmas we took the car loaded with camper, kids bikes etc and went to the away, freeway run about 1 1/2 our of Melbourne, wife an I driving, had to do a run back to Melbourne for Xmas day, and we ended up getting about 390klm out of the tank of lpg. Never ever had that happen before or after that occasion. Couldn't explain it at all.

I am now waiting to get it put onto a dyno machine to see if we can figure out what on earth is going on with this, as it is really starting to concern me and i am planning on doing a trip to Cape York next year but with this sort of economy I may need to consider upgrading the car before I go which isn't what I wanted to do.

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

      Hi,
I have commented on this topic previously but these are my figures from my last 3 month trip over 5 states. We have a V6 Auto 120 series towing an 18ft pop top as well as a lugguge pod on the Prado. The Prado was also fairly well loaded as we did some tent camping as well as caravanning.

Overall we did 18,640km & my estimate was that we towed the van for around 14,500km - which also included about 1,500 gravel roads. Also did some 4WDing. My overall consumption was just on 18 litres per 100km for the trip. Was happy with that as it meant around 1,000km for the full tank.

        Hi Willy and Theo
thanks for your comments, interesting to hear your figures and I would be pleased to see 18 l per 100 myself....now that I am in Perth and seeing such cheaper fuel costs 57 cents a litre for gas I feel much better, ( instead of the 109 cents in Broome ) I have unloaded the Prado and the trip computer is telling me I am using 18 litres per 100 around town but that has always underestimated usage, and I am so easy on the pedal too, so I'll see how much I get out of the tank...
thanks again fells and keep the comments going

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is a sensor of some sort on the exhaust side of the motor that could be giving false info back to the ECU thus increasing fuel usage????? Or as someone else suggested could a faulty/collapsed CAT converter be causing all this?? Other than the MAF sensor what other sensors are on the V6 4.0 Lt engine that give info back to the fuel management system and contribute to the fuel usage???

          Any ideas.

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

Almost finished my drive from Perth to Melbourne, have not done all the sums as yet but.......fully loaded truck roof rack and the van on the back at an average speed of 90 k's I am only getting 30 litres of gas per 100 k's (worse was 33!!!) and just a touch better on petrol, Ok there have been some head winds and overtaking of Road Trains, but for the most part I am taking it easy, tyre pressures up, but I believe there is something seriously wrong with the fuel management system, but when it goes in for its service I am sure I'll get the usual "nothing wrong with the motor mate!"

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

To get an average speed of 90kms what your normal cruising speed or do you mean you cruise at 90? I usually sit on the speed limit (100/110) but the average is usually 80 odd by the time you slow down for towns, etc.

1st time I've towed our camper (wind-up Goldstream) for awhile and got 16.8L/100 average according to the Scangauge (usually accurate). Would do a lot better if I could just dawdle along but...

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

                        G'day,

I just completed my first trip in my 07 GXL V6 Manual. Over 1000Kms towing my boat I used between 26 and 29 L/100km. This was doing 100Km p/h on the cruise control, manually throttling up big hills. The boat weighs around 2300kg and we also had my roof tent and box on the roof and four people in the car. This figure was obtained on LPG, I have JTG Liquid Injected Gas and PaceMaker Extractors.

                        Cheers

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

                            Hi Stevo,

Your are not the only one.

To be honest the figures are about what I expected.

My previous XR8 used around 40L per 100km on the same trip with the same load (less the roof rack) traveling slower.

Also just a side note, a mate has a 120 V6 auto and gets 22L per 100 towing his caravan on petrol on flat land. It is about 2200kg.

For these reasons I am happy with my 26-29L / 100km, considering the load, the roads I was towing on and the pace i was towing at.

I know it's not the same for you out in the bush, but with LPG at 70c (often less) its still the cheapest way to get a prado around Victoria (where i do allmost all my towing). Obviosly also the range isn't an issue for me like it is for your.

                            Cheers

                                Yeah, I am not suprised.

I was shocked, i went to Mallacoota at christmas and I was paying 78c at mallacoota. I drove up to Eaden for the day and gas was 94c. I would definatly be a diesel owner if i lived there.
