    Howdy group,

    I have been observing engine temperatures with the Scangauge and noticed that on my Land Rover Discovery V8, whenever I stop at lights, the temperature goes up to 97 deg C, but when I drive off again, the temperature starts dropping and levels out at 91 deg C after a minute.

    I pull up at the next set of lights, and the temperature climbs up again to 97 deg C, and when I take off, it drops down to 91 deg C again. So there's basically a 6 degree temperature swing on the coolant with the constant stop start driving.

    Can anyone with a V6 Prado and ScanGauge please confirm if you have a similar temperature swing with your engine?

    If you don't know how to get to the right screen, start by pressing the bottom right button that has a red circle. Then select GAUGE. Now with any of the 4 buttons flanking either side of the display screen, cycle through the display till you see cWT - that's Water Temperature in Centigrade.

    Please let me know what your engine temperatures are doing when you are driving and when stopped. I'm interested to know if there's a similar behaviour with the V6 motor.

    no, mine doesn't behave like that (I gather your wondering if it's reading wrong?). The temp rises but not suddenly.

      No, I'm not wondering if it's reading wrong. I'm wondering if there's an air bubble trapped in the cooling system somewhere that is causing the temperature fluctuations because it is affecting the proper functioning of the thermostat.

      How many degrees does your temperature fluctuate by when in stop start traffic?

          Hehehe... the air inlet temp at the throttle body on my V8 gets up to 91 degrees on hard runs

            The largest varience I have seen on the D4D is 86-89 deg.
            I would have though a varience as large as that in stop start traffic would mean either that the cooling system is inefficient at idle or maybe barely adequate (clutch fan not working properly ??). Or it is in the design that it just happens that way, but you would need to put the scanguage on someone elses to see (Eugene ??)

              Hi Tim,

              I just got back from Eugene's. Plugged my Scangauge into his vehicle and went for a drive. The temperature variation is mostly a 3 degree difference and tends to fluctuate a lot less.

              So I'm not sure exactly what's wrong with mine. The viscous coupling on the radiator fan is only a couple of years old and works well. The electric booster fan in front of the radiators does work when the engine is hot and the a/c is running.

              IT's been a week and there's no drop in coolant levels so I don't think there's a bubble of trapped air lurking around the cooling lines somewhere. I guess it must just be the thermostat (which is brand new) that is doing it.

              I did not have a Scangauge when the engine was running with the old thermostat, so I don't have something to compare with, to know whether the new one is faulty or not.

              Certainly Eugene's car did not seem to fluctuate in temperature like mine does. Maybe this is simply the symptom of a brand new radiator, a brand new water pump, and a brand new coolant thermostat? I just simply don't know. :?
