do you know how many litres it takes? ive read some and it says 12L and others say 9L. Obvilously I will see with how much comes out, its just ive got a 5L bottle of toyota concentrated coolant and wasnt sure if this was enough

          Auto 12L
          Manual 12.2L

I got my coolant from Toyota and it was pre-mixed, in 5L bottles.

            Hi all

Drained the 1GRFE block (as per Toyota workshop manual) and radiator today and only got 8L out of it. I was running late by that stage and just had to fill it back up again. The only thing I can think of is that I only did one drain plug at a time (radiator cap off the whole time). Maybe you need all three off at once for some reason, eg a vacuum that needs breaking? Should I be concerned and drain again? I didn't flush it with water (concerned about the leftover water that I may leave in there - particularly since I only got 8L of the 9.7L this cooling system is supposed to be able to hold - and Toyota don't flush either according to their manual). What will the consequence be if I leave it? Just that I'll need to change it sooner?

Should add, it's the 2005 Auto and changing now at 160k service so should be original coolant still (I.e. The coolants were both pink, old one was most likely the super long life that it shipped with)

                Hi Fellas,

I was going to change my coolant now at 160K as suggested in the book, BUT I called Toyota first and they told me that the coolant supplied with the vehicle from new is for the life of the vehicle and does not need to be changed! Just topped up. This is the pink (not the red) coolant that comes with the GRJ120 2005.

Now saying this I would like a second opinion cause in my books I don't believe any coolant could last that long without some corrosion. If any of you could confirm this that would be great. Even if you call your local Toyota just to check?

Firstly, the capacities are dry fill & you never seem to get it all out. Try removing the engine & shake it a bit might work.

Rut hunter, I would say change it first at 5 years & then every 2 or 3 years depending on your cash flow. Small cost for extra preventative maintenance.
Coolant is protecting so much from corrosion & expensive repairs. Radiators, welsh plugs, heater core, heads & gaskets, water pumps Etc.
4 lt of pre mix about $30 x 3 $90 cheep insurance for all that stuff.

should toyota coolant only be used?
or is the the red coolant from repco or similar ok to use?

Many years later, but to answer the previous question because it would be on the mind of and confuse so many first time coolant flush diyers. Use the Toyota red coolant if you don’t mind changing it twice as often (Long Life). Use the pink which the 120’s were factory filled with so your change intervals are around half as often as the red (Super Long Life - formulated for the aluminium radiators). Top quality red coolants from the auto shops are worth as much as the Toyota coolants, so just buy genuine. Don’t buy the cheap store coolants because they’re missing things to keep the price down, like quality corrosion inhibitors. When flushing the Super Long Life coolant every 100,000km or 5yrs, it certainly doesn’t hurt to replace the two hoses & the thermostat at the same time.
2005 120 series V6 Grande, 2 inch susp lift (King/EFS combo), 32 inch MT’s, Safari Snorkel, rear diff lock, breathers, Light Force spotlights, UHF, dual batteries.
