I'd like to know this too. I'll be checking mine next service. Thought of buying a cheap flexy camera off ebay too.

You can see it ok through the drain hole , its not a big job to drop off the lower pan to clean it anyway

Yep. It's visible. But a 2 min job to drop off the small sump to check it anyway.
Just make sure you've got silicone gasket to put it back on.

when you say visible... eye straight under the drain hole and copping a drip of warm oil in the face? I'll be wearing my face-shield for this task!

always so paranoid about taking off sump plates that aren't leaking yet!

Is this checkup something that needs to be done regularly? Why are you thinking there's something blocking the pickup?

If you are buying a 2nd hand high mileage V6 and suspect incomplete service history, there is a chance that the oil pick up is blocked.

Daughter just found this out the hard way last weekend. Water full, oil full, recently serviced, but motor seized. Mind you it did make noises and the oil light did come on and she did keep driving!

On the 4.0 it's pretty rare. But if it's left for long periods between oil changes it can gum up the pickup.

My brother-in-law bought a brand new car a few years ago and never got it serviced once. Never changed the oil or anything. He's just a tad lazy. Anyway a few years after owning it and 80,000km later it seized at a set of lights. The motor kept running but it wouldn't accelerate. Got it towed to the mechanic and they advised him of what happened to the motor. $10,000 to get a new engine fitted. During the weeks afterwards we found out bits and pieces of the truth as he was guarded about what happened and found out him and his wife were driving it for about 3 months with the engine oil light on. They just ignored it. Then later found out they never had it serviced from new. Don't know if it eventually ran out of oil or the pick-up screen got badly blocked. Most likely the later.
