  • Normal v6 idle speed?

    Howdy.
Can anyone tell me what the "normal" or correct idle speed should be for an auto v6 when warmed up?

When I'm sitting at the lights, foot on the brake, Tranny in Drive my rev counter shows pretty much exactly 500rpm which seems a bit low to me and sometimes it actually feels a bit rough. If I pop it into Neutral the revs go up to about 600rpm which I still reckon is pretty low.

    Cheers.

mine sits at about 500rpm and is very smooth, have to look at rev counter to check it's runnning.

Pretty much the same here too... It picks up another 100-odd revs if I flick the air con on. The engine feels very smooth though - actually I can't really even hear it.

Mine's quiet enough. Just seems to shake a bit from time to time when idling at the lights. Its going in for its 160k service next week so I'll see if anything improves after that.

          idel speed

An auto should idel anywhere from 500 to 600 rpm but can idel safley up to 800rpm if it is running rough you may need to look at the timing. if your truck has done more then 150000klm you may need to get the timing belt replaced

The 4.0v6 has a chain not belt. Had my 160,000 service last week and it still idles a bit rough. Never feels like its gonna stall or anything; just shakes a bit like its running a lumpy cam.

Will pull the throttle body off and give that a good clean up and maybe clean the Airflow sensor while I'm at it...
