Leaking fuel? HELP PLEASE

G'day all,

Noticed a really bad petrol smell coming from the rear passenger side today, jumped under to have a look and found petrol around the bottom of the front tank. Not dripping off the bash plate but no where near dry.

Will pull the bash plate off and see if I can see anything tomorrow when I have some light. HaS anyone ever had a similar problem?? Really dont want to waste a tank of fuel and take the tank off :cry:

By the way, which tank draws first when driving?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

All engine fuel is always drawn from the front tank. The fuel return is used to create a siphon from the rear tank which keeps the front tank full while there is fuel remaining in the rear tank. Overflow from the siphon goes back to the rear tank via a balance pipe.

One of our work prados copped a big stick which speared up between the sump guard and over the top edge of the front of the tank and put a hole in one of the fuel lines.

This might be a bit late, but I just had a crack in the rubber concertina hose, which joins the filler pipe onto the front tank. The crack was latteral i.e across the hose and was causing fuel to leak out mainly when filling. The fuel also appeared to leak out when driving but not much.
The replacement part was $91 from Toyota and took about 10 minutes to fit.

Yeh mate thats was the problem. Replaced is a while ago and has been good ever since.

It's probably something simple, like a hose is leaking from a split.

You'll just need to crawl underneath and shine a torch (preferably an LED one!) in a well ventilated area.

And don't park near any fuel burning devices like a lamp or 3 way refrigerator! :mrgreen:


EDIT: On an unrelated note, I've put up for sale in the "For Sale" section a fuel filter for a Prado V6 if you are interested in having a brand new genuine Toyota part as a cheap spare part - half price :!: Hope the moderators don't mind me mentioning this.... ops:
