Sorry mate, the wife dropped the car off and I forgot to tell her.

Anyway, it didn't fix the problem. I might have a look to see if the circlip has come loose.
    Cheers Skye

      Luxxxy,

If the circlip is dislodged, make sure you push the column down far enough to reveal the circlip recess. I ask my mechanic about this problem a couple of years ago, they said they had replace the circlip but obviously didn't push it far enough up.

      Good luck

Only Prado's with telescopic steering adjustment have the circlip set up. If you only have a standard "Tilt only" steering column then the set up is different with a sealed bearing at this point on the column/shaft.

Having driven the car around a bunch of times now this appears to have fixed my issue. I certainly am glad because it has cost me enough to chase down this rattle. It feels like a different car now and a pleasure to drive. In the back of my mind I am still waiting for it to come back when I go over a bump in the road, but so far so good. Hopefully the memory will fade soon!

Check the circlip at the top of the intermediate shaft. I stumbled onto this after getting jacked off with my prado having absolutely no road feel thru the steering wheel and a slight rattle over corrigations in the steering.
Follow link and scroll down for photos, (its in french me thinks) then take a torch and have a look.

I found my clip had dilodged and dropped about 5cm down the shaft.
Undone the 10mm bolt holding the lower spline, slid the shaft down, redid the bolt then persuaded the clip back into place with a flat blade screwdriver.
You will know when its in cos it make a hell of a click when in place.
Cost - $0.00 and about 20mins of time saved $680.00 at Toyota.

            Cheers

sorry for digging up an old thread, does anyone have a picture of where this circlip is located?

I think if you have a GX then you don't have the circlip setup prado2004. See MickL's comment above for a more technical explanation.

                  hi all

hoping to revive this thread for some help.

See my pic attached as I have 120 VX with telescopic and tilt steering adjustments and it does seem the circlip is down the shaft ~5cm and I have a noise/knock from this area...

What I have not worked out fully is, exactly how/steps to rectify it...

SteveVX noted that :> "Undone the 10mm bolt holding the lower spline, slid the shaft down, redid the bolt then persuaded the clip back into place with a flat blade screwdriver. You will know when its in cos it make a hell of a click when in place."

Specifically, exactly how and where do you push the column down far enough to reveal the circlip recess?? Where is the 10mm bolt holding the lower spline, to slide the shaft down? Appreciate any more guidance on this.

Hoping to avoid Toyota for what seems a easy fix..

                  Thanks in advance.

I also have a knocking in the steering column, gets bad on rough roads going slow.
                    Q. Will changing the bearing unit ('05 GX) fix the problem or should I change the entire column? (hoping that doing this actually fixes it at all).
                    Cheers

                        Hi guys,

sorry to revive an old thread. I acnt seem to push the shaft down far enough to reveal the recess. I removed the 12mm bolt at the bottom and the shaft is lose. I can move it up and down even out the spline at the bottom but it does not go down in the spline far enough to reveal the recess for the clip. Any ideas?

                          Hi all,
I found this great thread and hoping to fix the problem myself.
can someone spread some light on this fix?
maybe more specific pictures of the area and the actions to take In order to revel the circlip?

You dont need to disconnect anything! Just use a prybar to lever it down and push the clip up into grove. The shaft is meant to be lower anyway, the circlip holds it down.
