  • Whistle Noise from under the bonnet

    Hello,

On my 2008 Prado after the car warms up a loud whistle develops from under the bonnet or under the car, its hard to tell exactly.
tried turning the radio off etc. Tried foot on break but no different.
The noise stops when car is doing less than 15 KPH and doesnt do it when still and idling or revving when still.
The local Toyota dealer says its the snorkel, the snorkel was fitted 1 month after we bought the car and the noise has developed in the last month.

Has anyone had similar problem or thoughts on how to track the noise down.

    Cheers

I'd be thinking its a hole in a hose - whether it be vacuum or pressure not sure...
Is it louder when under load? I know you mentioned that it doesn't occur when lower than 15km/h but does the pitch/volume alter while driving at all?

Do you have the D4D, maybe its induction noise - check that all the snorkel pipes are still connected correctly?

    I'm only guessing...

Re: Whistle Noise from under the bonnet

      Hello Matty & Loz

Thanks for the reply, the noise does get louder under load or higher speeds, and when going under 60 PKM or so the pictch and volume does vary and cuts on and off at times.

I will check all the hoses and snorkel connections

      Cheers Terry

            Hi Tuff
I also had an annoying whistle and found it to be coming from the head of the Snorkel. The head was loose and had lifted up a little allowing air to pass thru the little spits in the head . Pushed the head down and tightened the stainless steel clip and it was all quiet again.
            Hope this helps
            Regards
            Graham

Re: Whistle Noise from under the bonnet

My snorkel was a pin in the arse on my 90 series T/D (safari). It was on passengers side and it annoyed the crap out of me. Wife was driving one night while I was passenger so I put window down to see where the hell it was coming from. As soon as I put my hand over the inlet it stopped, put my hand around the base of the ram didnt stop it, put my hand back in front of ram intake it stopped, so when we got home I turned the ram around just for trial noise totally gone. Just learnt to live with it but still annoyed me now and then. At least I new what it was. Regards Steve

What a timely topic!. I came back fron Bendethera and countless river crossing the weekend and on the way back I noticed this anoying whistling sound. This is most noticible when the car drops a gear back and the revs rises above 2000 rpm. At the moment I'm leaning towards a worn out pully bearing. The car will be going for a servive next week so hopefully it will all be resolved and revealed. (hopefully under the extended waranty)

Hi There Boomslang, was just wondering how you added fuelly to the bottom of your page like others have ?? I have joined fuelly but not sure what else I need to do to add to my page ?? Regards Steve..... PS hope its nothing serious with the noise !! Are you happy with snorkel in general ?? Am getting one fitted to mine, did you notice any induction noise or the like after fitting it ?? I really dont want any whistling or any thing coming from it especially as its on drivers side and the vehicle is so nice and quit after having the 95 series T/D dont want to spoil the quitness LOL Regards Steve
