Cracked Fuel Filler Pipe

Fuel filler pipe cracked and expensive unleaded spilt all over the servo driveway after filling up. Staff came out with emergency mop up gear and all. Don't know why this part has failed but just looks like it has perished over time with 200 000 + kays on the Prado now. Anyway ordered a new one approx. $100 from Toyota. Something to periodically check on your Prado as I'm not sure if it is a problem others have experienced.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune $100 isn't too bad though.
Did you have to order the whole line from the tank to the fuel filter?

I have lost a red clip that is on the inlet side of the filter.
Could you let me know if it comes with your order?

No, this is not near the fuel filter under the bonnet but at the rear of the car. It is the ribbed rubber/plastic fuel filler to tank pipe which allows fuel to flow from the bowser into the fuel tank itself. I did however see the little red retaining clip you speak of when I changed my fuel filter last service. When I purchased a new genuine Toyota fuel filter it didn't come with the red clip. I'm sure if you give Toyota a ring they will be able to supply you with a new one. I can PM you a particular Toyota dealer who is pretty good at chasing down parts if you want.

A friend of mine has just had the exact same problem (right down to the unleaded over the servo driveway). His is a late 2004 Grande with 200,000 on the clock. Definitely something people should be checking.

Just replaced mine as well, same result, diesel all over the concrete, 2004 120 series with 140ks, under $100 for new hose and replaced in about 10 minutes, easy fix. the hose goes hard over time and cracks in the flex area.

I would like to share a cheaper alternative with you and others in-order to save you guys big bucks.

You can use "toyodiy" to track down the part number for the part needed.

This is the part you would need below for both 120 series Petrol & Diesel as both have the same part number.

HOSE, FUEL TANK TO FILLER PIPE = 77213-35390 - $21.75 (20 to 30 days UAE) or $38.39 (10 days Japan) for a faster delivery!

I have just noticed mine has a leak around the flexi part $100 genuine is great, as it could be a $100 or more lost over time

I can remember reading about a recall on this for both Prado and FJ Cruiser but can't seem to find any info. If memory serves correct it was in the MTA magazine a year or so back. However as is posted above with the part numbers use amayama for the replacement part as even though I hold trade accounts they can be upto a third cheaper at their retail price than Toyota at trade as for some reason all local dealers have to source their genuine parts from a crowd called "Autoparts". So by the time you buy your part from the dealer there's already "3 cuts of the pie". So do yourself a favour and save some $$ and cut a few "Middlemen" out. Parts also arrive faster too

Hi. I am first time poster, long time reader. I too have the fuel leak issue. Started with a light smell fuel within the cabin area, particularly after refill. I initially put it down to just the smell of open fuel tank with 150L pumped in. Other day I saw while under vehicle that the rear tank bash plate was moist, as if someone had wiped a portion with a damp cloth. I investigated but could not locate any source. The rear portion of the plate was moist but not enough for a drip to form while I observed. I opened the fuel filler but this did not produce any further fuel moisture or flow. My drive way is sloped so I repositioned the vehicle slightly and fuel then began to run from the inside left rear mudflap which indicated to me that it was coming from possibly the fuel filler or where it joins to the rear tank. I want to replace the filler pipe and see from here that it is quoted as an "easy" 10 minute job. Some written 1, 2, 3 instructions would be appreciated as to how to perform the task, just to be sure. The vehicle is parked up waiting for the attention. I also looked at amayama site mentioned above but by the time you add the postage in $US I might as well go buy the part today for the convenience of getting mobile again, if I can work out how to do the job. Assistance is greatly appreciated.

Yours sounds more like you may have spilt some fuel and it's coming from the overflow pipe. Which exits pretty well on the rear left mudflap.
The pipe in this discussion is in front of the diff. Easy to see if you lay under the car. Just to the left of centreline. ( looking from rear).

I checked my 10 year old one on the hoist yesterday. All good still. Not brittle or hard. No cracks.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Hopefully the pipe will be obvious. As far as spill goes and the overflow, the I initial smell was at fill up and the obs of the moistness or the flow was not at full tank but later. I'll have a look.

Was the moisture fuel? Or water?

If water gets into the splash tray it runs down the pipe near rear passenger mudguard. Wh. Rain etc.

I'm having the same issue with an 07 with 260k on the clock... Quoted $87 from local toyota. Wreckers all said they generally cut that pipe and that they wouldn't trust a second hand rubber hose anyway! Have temp fixed with rescue tape for now and just have to do 1000ks plus to drain the tanks as I dont have 180L of Jerry Cans available :-)
