  • Purchasing a second master key

Just bought an '06 Prado, but it's come with only one remote master key, and one valet key. Other than the obvious "go to Toyota dealer and fork out $400" option, can anyone recommend a cheaper solution to creating a second remote master key? eBay abounds with blanks and shells, but nothing with the remote module.

    Thanks

    Hi TRVCK,

    welcome to the forum!

I believe you can get the blank from eBay, have it cut and then programmed from Toyota... They should charge around $50 to have it programmed (still bloody steep though!!)

I had this done to my old VX commodore but those keys program themselves when you turn the key (after having opened the car with the original key to let it know you're not a thief)

      Thanks Loz,
Your plan is a good one except for the "have it programmed" bit. The eBay keys tend to be the blank key and the shell, but don't have the actual remote electronics in them, so yes, you can get them cut, but they won't be programmable. I need the all-important remote module as well.

      cheers,

You could always try your local shopping centre key cutter, i just priced a key with no internal module from them and they quoted $80. I think i saw something while i was there that they do complete keys with the module for about $150 ???

            Hi,
            I had the same problem.
I bought one from ebay for around $40.00, it was a toyota blank from o/seas- i woulnt buy aftermarket blanks, its not worth the risk of it failing and shutting down the immobiliser. Check the glovebox manual you need to know the key code. Also be aware there are different key types, make sure you buy the right blank.
I bought a blank key, took it to a locksmith and had it cut to the key code in the manual.
Then took the key to toyota and they programmed it for me.
They charged $40.00, but you need the original key and the car.

The guy selling it ebay offered to cut it for me to the code, and if I were to do it again i would go that option, its probably cheaper.

To get it all done at toyota is around $400.00.

Did this about a year ago and never looked back, i wouldnt run with one key, as i said previously you cany recut a key without the original, if you loose your only key they cant copy it. The computer needs to be reprogrammed to a new key and that would be a lot more $$$$$.

            Regards

            Jay

              Thanks one and all,
Went and had a chat to Mister Minit in the local shopping centre; a new key with chip embedded, cut and programmed to car, but NO REMOTE is $189. The one I went to "conveniently" had a deal on (a flyer was produced from nowhere, with no obvious expiry date) for 10% off automotive keys. Where it gets even more expensive is the addition of the remote, this brought it up to around $480!!! $434 with discount. I've gone with the latter.
