  • Dust inside cab

I have recently bought an 03 120ser and have noticed a lot of dust gets inside the cab when driving on dirt roads even when the a/c is switched on recycled air.

Almost as soon as I hit the dirt you can smell dust and after about 5-10mins of driving you can see it inside the cab.

I've checked the air filter and intake and all seems fine the only thing I've noticed that could cause dramas is the rubber covers inside the front wheel arches are both missing.
    Any ideas on whats wrong?
    Has anyone had this problem?

    Cheers, Plunko

I've been told that putting the A/C on recycle actually creates a slight vacuum inside the cab and therfore sucks the dust inside. Unless you are travelling in the dust of another car in front, you should leave the A/C on the fresh air function.

I tried this in my old Patrol and it seemed to make a difference.

    Hope this helps.

that its I thought when travelling in dust you should have the AC set to fresh air to push the air from inside out stoppinf dust from coming in any small holes.
Just make sure the AC filter is nice and clean.

I'll give it a go on fresh air but i still don't beleive there should be this much dust entering the cab it's entering through the a/c vents not through small holes. Never had a problem in my old hilux on any setting unless i was following someone with the a/c set on fresh air.

Leaving it on fresh air will allow the dust to enter through the fan that sits below the glovebox compartment. Some vheicles have a cabin filter here and others do not. It is worth while purchasing a cabin filter as they retail (non toyota option) for about $25.00 If you look at the genuine Toyota filter than be prepared to spend about $90 for the same filter.. It will not stop the dust but will reduce it.

With AC on and recirculate then you will pressurise the cabin which will help reduce the amount of dust that will get in but dust will always find a way.

What covers are you referring to?
There was a problem with installers not putting in the rubber bung after installing a towbar, but that is at the rear near the tail lights. Maybe check there as well.

Nick I have never understood the logic behind this, how can it pressurise the cabin when you are only pushing around the air that is already in the car? surely the only way to pressurise is to push extra air into the car from outside of it, yes obviously you need a good filter to clean the air out as it comes in.
I just can't see how you could pressurise the cab by only pushing around air that is already in the cab.

BlackVX, I agree with you in principle but...

I believe that on recirc it still bleeds a little air from outside which pressurises the cabin without pulling in too much dust.

That is my understanding as well. I think it will vary from vehicle to vehicle but it's something like 10-15% fresh as a health requirement.

And it is directed through a vent usually on the drivers side around head/chest level to aid against oxygen depletion, or being overcome by nasty exhaust fumes or flatulant passengers ;p etc.

well there you go, I was totally unaware of that. I stand corrected and will be using it this way in future.

AMTS the covers i'm refering to are the ones inside the front wheel arches to reduce dirt and mud entering the engine bay. They are made of a soft rubber and look like they have been torn off or fallen off rather than taken off.

Schaffer Cheers for the advice i will look into the cabin filter. Can you get them at any old suppercheap or autobarn?
