I had mine done at around 130ks, from memory parts were about $250 and labour was around $100 per side but that was about a year ago so I might be a bit off on the pricing. I can look it up if you like.

If the history of the car is unknown to you there could be any number of reasons, no maintenance, water or dirt ingress, wrong offset wheels.

That said the bearings in my Rodeo are upto 160k's now and have done many water crossings and have never been checked, mybe a job for the weekend

Mate, I got quoted about $500-$600 each from Toyota did a bit of phoning around and got them done for about $270 each through a great 4wd place in SA. Certainly worth ringing about! Good luck..

Yeah I will ring a few places, you can only hear it if you drive with the passenger window open. is that the same as yours? mine is like a whistle more than a grinding. I dont want to spend money on shit I dont need if I can spend it on a lift kit or snorkle!!

Yeah, sounds similar to mine. It varied at speed and the only time i didnt notice it was when i was on the dirt. As soon as i had both front bearings replaced it was fixed, the only noise i hear now is from the tread patterns of the Cooper ST's!

                  Just FYI,
Ive just had my RHS wheel bearing replaced last week. Nearly $300 for the bearing and dust seal thingo + $150 odd for labour. Cars done 170K km's through dust, dirt, mud pits, corrugations e.t.c. Might be time to check the LHS as well.

                  Cheers, Mick

130,000 ks and had noise from front end for a couple of months now. Started coming in at 100k/hr and now heard from 45k/hr. Running BFG AT's which a where pretty worn/feathered and scrubbing the insides out which led me to believe tyres were a slight possibility. Changed tyres today and noise still there from 45k/hr on. Noise completely goes away with slight turn of the wheel to the right. To me this rules out the front diff and I am suspecting the right wheel bearing however there is absolutely no vertical play in either front wheel when jacked. Question to those who have had wheel bearings crap themselves is, 'have you felt any play in them when noisy'? I dont want to spend money replacing bearings on spec and suspicion when I have no evidence it is in the side I suspect.

I have changed the RhS at 140k. Still need to do LHS. After a drive, the temperature between the RHs is around 10 degrees cooler than left hand side. You can feel the difference by touch, but i have TPMS and this shows temp difference. Before I changed RHs I had some play in bearing but no play in LHS. If you change one best to do both. I had a low speed squeaking noise that is what made me start looking for problems.

                        Hello all,
Resurrecting an old thread as I have encountered the same problem. Whirring noise noticeable above 60kph and a buzz through the steering wheel. Noise disappears with the slightest of left turn when on the highway. Swapped tyres with a mate and still there, replaced the left wheel bearing and still there, fluid levels fine. Front pads changed about 20,000 Klm ago. Transmission into neutral at speed and still there. Whirring noise increases and decreases with speed change. Try the right wheel bearing maybe?
                        Thoughts appreciated,
                        John

Hi Sozjot, I have this exact same problem, only occurs after 80kmh, and noise is only there when steering is straight or turns to the right. Pull steering to left and it goes away completely. I did the same changed the left wheel bearing but noise still remained.

Let me know how you go and if the noise goes away after changing the drivers side bearing.

                            G'day John,

I think your RHS bearing is shot. I had the same issues at about 120ks and got the right wheel bearing replaced. Everything was fine after that. 20ks later the LHS bearing began to sing it's melody of death. :-/
Try replacing the RHS wheel bearing, this should help I think.

                            Regards
                            Sven

                                Hi all,
The right wheel bearing change has fixed the problem. The hub/bearing combination felt a bit graunchy when removed and placed on the bench but nothing particularly obvious in the bearing once it was removed. Glad that's over!
                                Cheers,
                                John
