  • Windscreen protection

Hi all, 1st timer to this site and would appreciatte some suggestions if possible.........

Will be doing some travelling in our 120 series soon and although having the usual protection fitted, bullbar, headlamp covers etc, does anyone know of any windscreen protection? We'll be in Darwin soon but dont know of any supplier of a clear film type protector there, was actually thinking of the old mesh type from years ago, that it can be fitted or removed to suit. Something that can cope with the impact of a rock.
    Any suggestions.........many thanks.

Where are you planning on going, what type of driving are you looking at doing and are you travelling in convoy? I don't know of anyone who has done anything in the way of windscreen protection. I do know what you are refering to in terms of the old style mesh but havn't seen that activly used for a long time.

Yeh, saw this on the news tonight. What a tragic, freak accident. The report stated that the offending rock was the size of a mango. My thoughts go out to the victims family.

Thanks for your replies.....Yeh NTP, your right, tho not worried, just concerned. This is a terrible thing that happened & my families thoughts are with the family & others involved, but it may have been avoidable, was there not a large chunk of steel that fell off a truck a few years ago that caused a fatality as well ??

We'll be going dwn the Stuart Hwy Shaffer, turn left at Three Ways, along & up to Townsville then dwn the east coast road to Brissy, although no 4WDriving, no one wants to see this happening. I found a clear film that can be applied, but its dwn south only and i doubt it would cover a rock described as a missile hence the question of a mesh screen, one that can be taken off when driving around town or simply just used when on Hwy or out bush etc. I can remember seeing the mesh type years ago, some only cover half the windscreen, heard of a bus had its windscreen smashed due to a 'half screen', so i'd be interested in a full mesh type. Although windscreens have improved since years gone by, this was a tragic and terrible accident.

          Thanks for your replies tho.............

Yes. That was a freak accident where a vehicle ran over a metal plate which destroyed the rear wheel and jammed, causing the vehicle to lose control. Unfortunately, it occurred just before a bridge and the vehicle careered off into the river, which was in flood. Three children died as a result trapped in their child seats. This incident still haunts me.

We also have to put up with our outback cousins throwing rocks at your side and rear windows when you attempt to drive by. Visual display of 12 guage is usually a suitable deterent.

Doubt you can get the mesh stone guards anymore - obtruct vision is the most likely reason.

I recall 10 or so years ago driving along joondalup drive south and was minding my own business I casually observed road verge mowing happening on the other side of the dual carriage way. then wham a big noise which scared the living daylight out of me.

Fortunately the window wasn't damged but upon inspection a junk of limestone had collided at a ngle meanign no damage occurred - some sand and calcification was embeded into the windscreen.

Having pieces of metal hit windscreens is a freak occurnece however I'm more concered about windows being smashed from tree barnches whihc enroach on many tracks.

@bushbasher yes know the feeling don't have to be bush for that to happen, pity most of us aren't allowed to carry a 12 gauge in our vehicle
