  • D4D vs V6: How much have you paid for service?

    I thought it would be interesting to ask the good members here, both owners of the D4D and V6, how much they paid for their 'regular' service (not including extraneous items/expenses) for each interval?

    The idea behind my query is to compare the average ownership costs between the D4D and V6.

    For example,

    D4D or V6?

    1. 10,000km
    2. 20,000km
    3. 30,000km
    4. 40,000km
    5. 50,000km
    6. 60,000km
    7. 70,000km
    8. 80,000km
    9. 90,000km
    10. 100,000km

    PS I expect the D4D cost to be the most expensive at the 100,000km mark as this includes the cost of the timing belt replacement.

      You may have missed a previous posting which was on another subject but I posted this price list from my dealer.
      It's not a bad guide.

      (Has just been updated) This is their current service price list.

      The D4D Timing belt is not required until 150,000 km & I believe it is not that expensive?

        Fazza, great find... but I doubt those figures include the changeover costs for the timing belt, which is usually recommended at 100,000km if I'm not mistaken. :?:

        Going from Team Piggy's data... over the first 100,000km it appears there is virtually little difference in running costs (including price premium of the D4D over the V6 plus fuel and maintenance costs of each) between the two engine options.

        At this stage it would take a lot of convincing to sway me away from the 4L V6.

          I am not meaning to stir , but hopefully just stating the obvious?
          That comment was a stir in it's self (Sorry)

          Just checked the service book that came with my 07 D4D Prado & it states 150,000 km for timing belt replacement. (A lot of vehicles will be out of Toyota warranty at that mileage) So you can go where you like to have it replaced.

          As for maintenance costs, its really a game of swings & slides re- fuel costs over mileage, spark plugs over cam belts & the list could go on for ever.
          Both versions have their Plus & Minus attributes, so I guess it all boils down to what you are happy with or what suits your needs.

          My choice was the diesel because (in my opinion) with its huge amount of low down torque it has a better towing configuration plus fuel economy.
          Must re- iterate I do not have a problem with Petrol verses Diesel, both great engines. In fact until recently I was anti- Diesel.

          Let the Petrol & Diesel Prado 's live on. (Oh what a feeling)

            Hi Fazza

            All good points as usual.

            Although Toyota advise you change your timing belt at 150,000km, every Toyota I've owned have had the timing belt changed at 100,000kms (just to be safe). On that basis, your D4D will have its timing belt changed twice in 200K if you choose to do the regular services at Toyota dealerships.

            It's the protocol at nearly every service dept, not just Toyota. Even my spark plugs in my Holden are changed at 80K instead of the service book stipulated 120K. etc... The dealer will seek to change as much as possible... probably because there is a margin for each job.

            Yes, as you put it, swings and slides... but then again so is your driving pattern esp if you do a lot of weekends away [sorry my 19 mo son turned the laptop off at this point...] towing a boat or trailer... but I need the Prado primarily as a family hauler. It will never go off-road so I need to determine the most economical solution for my needs.

              As for most economical, for around town fuel wise, the diesel will kill the petrol.
              (That comment may cause a bit of a debate?)

                  I checked that Frankston Toyota link...seems to refer to the old KZJ diesel.
                  I think D4D prices are a little higher.

                  Perth prices for D4D 10k service range from $270 - $390....Seems a lot for oil,filter & lube service.. Oh and the $390 price included imaginary fuel & oil treatments. How can a brand new engine need those "treatments"

                    Frankston Toyota verbally said that those prices covered all models & they are firm prices. You may notice there is a little comment that states from 03 to current. (Only change being worn brakes, fan belts etc & you would be contacted before any extra work was carried out) I don't think there would be much difference between the two motors, "cost wise".
                    The comment was made that they made a standard fixed price to try & keep their client base.
                    If a clean workshop is any guide, their's would be easily the cleanest I have ever seen.

                    As I do my own servicing those costs don't count for much, other than knowing what I have saved & that it has been done.
                    (Yes, I have to use genuine parts & keep a record of purchase)
                    Just out of interest, If I go back to Frankston Toyota I get a discount on parts as I purchased the vehicle from them.

                    I Agree it does seem a lot $390, for what I would suggest as unnecessary treatments. :roll:

                      V6 120, with vapour injection LPG.

                      With the About same spend as diesel once you have gassed the puppy up.

                      You'll find its the cheapest spend in the long run in the city (fuel costs) and will gain approx 3-7kw power stock on LPG (Thanks to Harvey for the specs on his converted Grande 120).

                      You wont have the family complaining about the diesel smell (although minimal on D4D) Or the dirty oily fuel bowsers that you will find the wife demands disposable gloves for.
                      More power than you could ever need and a much quieter smoother ride.

                      I run a fleet of 4 LPG powered vehicles and can confirm it has dropped my petrol bill by over 1500 a month!

                        Having dealt with Toyota motor dealers at work I have found that they like to add extra prices to services like 20 bucks to fill the windscreen waterbottle with water etc. The cars we had were a fleet of Landcruiser troopies and Toyota was about double the price for a service, on average compared to most able mechanics.
                        A good mechanical workshop charge a fraction of the price and still follow the service manual like Toyota does. Warrantees are still covered, just that they wont use a genuine Toyota oil filter or air cleaners like the dealer does.
                        So when the question of Petrol V Diesel price comparison, maybe we should ask ourselves, Dealer V good mechanic workshop.

                          Interesting post in regards to general service cost of diesels on 4wdmonthly forum.

                          Add cost for timing belt on Prado D4D. I didn't know injectors needed replacing at 150,000km. Would this be common for the D4D?

                          2.8 turbo/intercooled and (somewhat) worked R9 2002 Rodeo. Steel tray. Usually at max GVM 2700/2800kg
                          Fuel price down the road today 131.9 per litre.

                          Usual consumption
                          country - 10.5-13.5 L/100km dependent on right foot and terrain
                          city - 8.5-9.5 L/100km
                          oil change, every 5000k's - Penrite oil $30 (ish), filter $10 (ish)
                          fuel filter change every 15,000 (ish) - $15
                          pump adjustment/check every 50,000 (and Dyno) - last one was $155
                          injector replacement every 150,000 (ish) - $1000

                          Blow the motor up and need I a new one? Around $4500 fully fuelled but no turbo plus fitting but I'd do that myself as I do the services myself. BTW, the 2.8's have a nitrided crank and it cant be ground.

                          Thats why diesels are not an automatic choice, it depends on what you are doing!

                              Hey Plucker,

                              I think I will keep getting mine serviced by Toyota, at least until the warranty has expired.

                              If I have a problem, There is only Me and My Dealership, (vehicle bought and serviced at that dealer) that could be brought into the arguement over warranty and repairs

                              Whereas;

                              If I bought the car from one dealer, serviced somewhere else, if there was a problem, (especially if the servicing agent was not a toyota dealer), each of them will blame the other, and I will be left pursuing them both, and trying to prove who was at fault? and who should pay what??

                              I have seen this exact thing happen, and the dealers/servicing agents being dragged through the courts. NOT A FUN EXPERIENCE. (No it was not me and it definately was not a toyota).

                              This is why I choose to have the one person to point the finger at, and no one else for them to pass the buck too!!!!



                              Just my thoughts on the matter.
