  • vibration/shudder when turning at low speed

    Greetings all

I have an 04 GXL and have just started to notice a vibration / shudder when turning, if you turn from left to right in a carpark you can feel this vibration through the car, a mate was sitting in the back and said it felt like it was under him ?? I am going to check uni's etc but could it be in the constant 4wd part of the gearbox ? This has only just started since coming back from a trip towing our caravan.
Driving straight is not a problem, I would be interested to hear if anyone else has suffered from this cause this vibration sounds expensive to fix.

    Cheers

Had a similar problem with my 120 after the dealer changed oil in diff. Some Diff addative fixed the problem.
It was the diff clutchs not releasing smoothly.

I had a similar problem with my Patrol a few years ago, whenever I accelerated around a tight corner I noticed a shudder coming from the rear of the car. When I had it serviced I asked the mechanic about it and he changed the diff oil. After that it was all good again.
Hopefully your problem will be as easy as that to fix.

Gents I feel like a bit of a plonka cause I went under the car yesterday and checked all the uni's shockies and anything else that could have been loose and I then banged the fuel tank in the middle with my fist and it vibrated ?? on close inspection the steel guard which protects the fuel tank one of the spot welds had broken and the 2 metals were just touching so I bent the metal out of the way and went for a drive and hey presto the vibration had gone, obviously under a bit of load the tank vibrates. Mate was I relieved, anyway thanks for the replies.

Well gents after my last comments I went for a drive around town and bugger me the shudder came back but not as bad though, I have taken the advise and I am currently draining the diff oil and going tp put Castrol 90 grade limited slip in there. I went to get Penrite but nil stock in town. Anyway will keep you posted and I had a look and 30,000kms ago I put FUSCH 90 grade in there but i have done a bit of towing with the van and boat in that time.
Anyway keep you posted if it fixes it, it seems to only start once Ive done a few KM's and the oil gets hot and probably thinner ??

              Cheers

I'll be interested to see what the results are. I have the same issue in my 09. Service couldn't fault it though. I feel it quite a bit, mainly at hard right turns from low speed. It almost feels like traction loss. I do need a new set of tires.

Well it's still bloody there, the wife went for for a drive today and said its back but not as bad a before, i have changed the oil in the diff and like you said prado-admin my tyres are down to the wear line but I cant see the tyres causing this shudder, it's funny that it has started all of a sudden.Thers no sign of it in a straight line and no noise coming from the rear end, could it be in the tranfer box/auto transmission? as its constant 4wd. I am resisting taking it to toyota dealership so if anyone has a remedy please let me know.

                      Hi Ovensy
Like I said in previous post mine happened when dealer changed oil in diff. When I took it back about the shudder they put a tube of diff treatment in it and after half an hour of driving the shudder was gone.

Bend your bash plate more, the metal could have sprung back a bit, hence why it is not as bad as before.

Well everybody the shudder has gone, I have put this down to the oil in the diff and I put new LSD oil in there and it took about 1/2hr of driving around but it has now completely disappeared, Good call Sparksy I didnt put the additive in but just replace the oil. Mate I am going to get myself a decent oil pump cause it really kills your arms trying to squeeze 2.6 lites into a diff while laying upside down.
                          All's good
