    2009 D4D

    When I fuel up the fuel bowser clicks off and I can’t get any more fuel in the tank and it is not full.

    If I leave it for an hour or so I can get around another 40 litres in.

    I have checked and re-routed the breathers to under the bonnet and also asked the local Toyota dealer about this problem but still have no solution,
    Any one got any ideas????

    Hi Guys,

    I suggest you use the Bowser at Half Speed and when you get close to the filler neck, slow right down.
    Then Shake / rock the vehicle several times (as this will cause the Tank to Burp and breathe), and the diesel should drop down the neck, so you can put more fuel in.

    I have done this for 20 years with the Diesel vehicles I have had.
    The breathers can't cope with the fuel pouring in at the max. rate on the nozzle as it causes the diesel to foam and creates air locks.

      Tried that Stuart even had the nozzle on low speed while filling the whole tank.

        Something must be blocked or restricted. I fill mine up at the truck bowser. At least double the flow of diesel is going into the tank with no problems. I have the same model and year vehicle. Have you looked underneath to see if the hoses are damaged etc?

          Sounds like fuel is not transferring properly between the rear tank to the front tank.

            Airlock maybe

              Thanks for the help.

              I have been underneath checked every thing that can be seen, everything looks ok.
              I used to fill it up with the high flow pump, It would fill up click off and be full, now it won’t even fill with the slow flow pump.

              Looks like I may have to drop the tanks out to investigate further.

                I don't have my workshop manual CD with me to investigate further. Aside from an ants nest being built as we speak inside your filler pipe (doubt it) then one would think that its the breather pipe. But if you fill the tank slowly and it doesn't fill properly then there is an obstruction inside the tank. How do you know it's not your full gauge being faulty?

                I just read your first post again. where does the breather from the tank go. Isn't on the filler pipe?

                  Fuel Gauge isn’t faulty. If I go back to the petrol station an hour or so after filling it up I can get around another 40 litres in then it’s full.

                  There is also a breather under the car that comes from both tanks.

                  I am wondering if there is something wrong with the filler pipe.
                  How dose it fill the first tank first then fill the second tank.??
                  Is there some sort of flow control to both tanks in the filler pipe??

                    have seen this before. Try freeing up the valve on the rear tank, on the fill line. This valve has a spring to keep it closed until the front tank is full. You can wedge this open, but if you do be sure to fill both tanks all the way. Remove the large fill tube, and inspect the valve. Use a piece of wire to ensure it is working freely, or wedge open.

                    My brothers 120 and 150 have suffered the same issue. Toyota eventually fixed it but don't know what they did, other than freed up this valve.
