    Snorkel Safety?

    Hi everyone,

    I am new at this 4WD caper so please excuse my ignorance and a dumb question.

    My Prado D4D Auto was ordered this week and one thing I considered adding to the order was a Snorkel. My only problem is that I wondered if it creates a blind spot by making the front right hand pillar wider. Having never ridden in a vehicle with one on it's hard to know if it would be a problem right there in your face. I consider myself a safe and capable driver but I guess you can't be careful with something you haven't seen.

    Can the snorkel go on either side or are you limited to the one side and would that make a difference.

    G'day Con and welcome to the forum,

    Firstly, no you can't choose which side the snorkel goes unless it's a _very_ customised installation.

    It's a fair enough question about the visibility, particularly if you haven't sat in many vehicles set up with one. The good news is that the Safari snorkel on my truck causes no vision problems whatsoever. The snorkel is narrower than the A pillar (when viewed from the driver's seat) and can't be seen. The only bit I can see is the corner of the intake ram.

      My experience with the Safari snorkel backs up Drew's comments. I expected it to be far more intrusive so have been pleasantly surprised that I hardly notice it.

        I have never noticed the safari snorkel on mine either and I have actually had to look twice on a couple of occasions to make sure it was still there :?

          the only viewing problem i have is with weather shields....seems to distort your view as its a curved surface. no biggy..just move my head a bit

              Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

              Received confirmation form the Lease company today that my new Prado ETA, which was ordered this week is Jan 18th so I guess I am going to have some time to think about it.

                I feel your pain.

                Ordered mine June 25th. Earliest possible pickup is Late October. Some time in November is more likely. 5 month wait is not an uncommon story at the moment. A lot of Prado's being sold at the moment.

                  No obscured vision from the Safari.

                  On occasion, I actually find myself stretching just to have a look at it from the inside... I still love the look of it.

                    Same here...no issues from the snorkel.

                    I dont live to far away from you if you are ever coming past werribee.... feel free to stop in and have a look at how its fitted etc if you like

                      There have been a few replies saying the Safari snorkels don't create a blind spot. Are there any TJM snorkel users who can comment on blind spots?

                        I have the tjm snorkel, and its the same story.

                        In fact the snorkel was on for over a month before the misses even noticed it, and she is the everyday driver.

                          Thanks, Wil. That's good to hear, as it was my wife who was asking me about the blind spot. It's her daily driver and she doesn't want to see it. I assume you have a 120 series (diesel)?

                            I have a Safari snorkel installed on my 120 Series TD. The snorkel isn't obtrusive but it does increase the blind spot created by the driver side windscreen pillar by about an inch. I've sat in a mates 120 Series TD with a Safari snorkel and it's the same deal. I think it really depends on how tall you are and how the driver's seat is adjusted. In some positions you don't notice the snorkel at all.

                              From the drivers seat i cannot see my tjm snorkel, no affect to blind spot.
