I recently purchased a 2003 GXL prado.
I soon discovered that the only key supplied was the (grey) sub key.
When I called toyota they said I need to change a whole heap of computers to reprogram a master key which would cost around $2000!!
Anyway, after a lot of googling and calls I came across a shady locksmith who said he could reset the computer to create another master key.
As it turns out my mate used to own a prado and still had a key with the remote which he did not need.
So I did the following.
I ordered a empty shell from ebay for $10.
I got the key of my mate and unscrewed the remote "guts" and put it in the new shell.
I called the locksmith guy and he came around.
He was able to create the master key using some kind of dongle which he plugged into the vehicle.
He then sat for another hour after which he gave up trying to program the remote to work.
He says that the master key is now working but since the remote is a different frequency, he can not get the remote to pair up.
I am able to get the vehicle into registration mode, but when Pressing the keys on the remote, nothing happens.
Now I am trying to find out what the story is with frequencies?
I don't really want to fork out $400 for a remote from toyota.
I found remotes on ebay in the US for the GX470 which is sort of the same car.
Does anyone know if they will work as a remote?
or can anyone suggest where I can get a cheap remote from?
