Good to know that you're happy with the 3L TD. It's too easy to get put off your ride by reading negative reviews. New doesn't always translate to better.

That's just my 2c.
Hi SS, So how long does a motor need to be out to be proven ?
The D4D is now around 3years in the marketplace in big numbers and there is no negative inherent fault type info surfacing yet
The exploding Nissan 3lt was happening very early after release
CRD technology is over 5 years old in mass production
So how long will we wait to test the motor and decide its Ok to proceed ?

I would be taking the vehicle to a specialist diesel workshop. Toyota dealer workshops seem to struggle with a basic service let alone engine management issues (our last service= sump cover plate lost, fuel bowl switch not plugged in and grease on the seat cloth)

We have a 1kz powered GXL. Mods are: suspension, steel bar, winch, cargo barrier, rear drawers, fridge in car at all times, plus full recovery kit, tyre repair gear and other odds and ends in the back all the time.

We have averaged 10.6l/100km over 2yrs of ownership (10.3 before mods)
Best was a sub 10 when we first got it (being gentle)
Worst 11.5 in Tas two months ago (West Coast, all dirt roads and with 2hrs of low range work) we were fully loaded for a months stay and 5 days of food and water on board)

Our only engine mod is that I have disconnected the EGR valve. (no differance to performance or fuel)

I would say we drive roughly equal amounts of city/highway/dirt roads.
80% of the time with two on board + gear.

I think it pulls well, I drive to keep up with the traffic but don't go over the legal limits. It overtakes fine in 5th and goes just fine through the Adelade hills ( it stays in 5th and on the legal limit all the way up the South Easten freeway )

Yes it's a 5 speed but how bad can the Auto be?

Now with 3BAR MAP sensor & 18PSI Boost!

The D4D has been out in other markets in the last 3 years when the 120 Series first appeared, albeit in a lower state of tune compared to the version that was first released here in Australia in Nov 2006.

So far it seems that this motor does not have any major issues, so it looks like a promising long termer.

Of course, Australian conditions are somewhat different to Europe as well as the quality of fuel.

I know that the D4Ds in Malaysia had a lot of trouble due to poor quality diesel.

I should have been more specific and stated "in Australia, under Australian conditions, using Australian quality fuel".

We know the engine is a goody in Europe (UK) but their higher quality fuel and lowish temps are less of a challenge for any motor.

I am unhappy like you worthy.
My fuel before d tronic with stock tyres 13.9 per 100 and after d tronic 13.9 per 100.
Towing camper it went up to 19 per 100.
Toyota says all ok.
Dust ingress is absolutely disgusting. I have to clean my sunnies every hour otherwise I can't see through the dust.
Other than that it is very comfortable to drive and I do like the d tronic as it makes it that little bit easier to drive. I just wish my fuel consumption was better.

Hey Worthy Mate, you want to try a 2.8Ltr Diesel Patrol Engine now thats a slug, until you learn to drive it and take advantage of the turbo boost but it gets resonable fuel economy for an old tech engine.

I get the feeling at times that many people have been driving V6 Auto Comodes, Falcons etc. and expect the same performance from a 4WD diesel (I will not use the term SUV as it is American sales speak), it just doesn't happen .

You can try the Beemas, Mercs or even a Porche 4WD's and get great performance but take them off road for a big session and ??????

Phew! got it off my chest now, must have had a bad night
