  • Extended warranty- Thoughts?

    G'day all
Have got a new D4D Prado ordered (hopefully for Oct delivery) and wanted to find out peoples thoughts about getting an extended warranty. Have been quoted just over $1000 to extend the Toyota warranty to 200000km/6yr but has to be serviced at Toyota.
Seems reasonable enough price and hopefully should help to maintain a good resale value.
    Does the price sound reasonable?
Has anybody come across any non-Toyota policies so that the car doesn't have to be serviced by Toyota for the full time of the warranty?
JUst thinking that if there is a problem with the engine when it is out of warranty that hasn't yet become apparent then it might be worthwhile to have.
    All thoughts appreciated
    Thanks

If your keeping the car for longer than 3 years it might be worth it..however it shows how dominant Toyota are in the marketplace, given that if you were to buy a Pajero, you would get the following as a factory standard

5 year or 130,000km* Factory Warranty.
Bumper to bumper 5 year or 130,000km* Factory Warranty
Applies to all new passenger and light commercial vehicles purchased after December 1st 2004.
Fully transferable to new owners inside the warranty period.
    10 year or 160,000km* Powertrain Warranty†.

Mitsubishi's 10 year or 160,000km* Powertrain Warranty† also applies on the following components:
    Engine
    Turbo charger
    Water pump
    Engine transmission mounts
    Transmission/transaxle (auto/manual)
    4WD transfer case
    Propeller shaft
    Drive shafts and axles
    Differential

You may be able to extend the warranty when the standard warranty expires(there may even be companies other than Toyota that may be able to do this), but its probably easier to get the extension right at the start, and include the cost in your finance/lease payments rather than fork out more $$$ later...? as long as you are happy to only have it serviced by Toyota.

Interesting. I to am waiting for my D4D VX but I was quoted $1600, from memory, for an extended FACTORY warranty. This extended it to 150,000kms or 6 years.

I have been down this path before with extended warranties. There is a big difference between extended factory and extended dealer warranties. With the dealer ones you must get it serviced at a particular dealership. The factory one is exactly the same as the original.

The main reason I was considering it was due to resale value down the track if I decide to update within a 6 year period, which is likely.

Could you let me know exactly which warranty you have been quoted for because I was under the impression that extended factory warranty prices were fixed by Toyota australia.

One more thing is that the factory warranty is fully transferable to the new owner if you sell the vehicle. Pretty sure tha extender dealer warranties are not.

      Thanks

Got my '03 GXL at Easter time and got another 3 year Extra Care Warranty with it - cost me $1400 - and it's already payed for itself.

We were stuck in Port Augusta with a buggered tensioner pulley, idler and v belt recently - the whole repair cost nothing, nix, nada - they provided us with a used car off the lot for punting to and from the shops, and the Extra Care mob is contributing $100 a day towards the accomodation (for the extra days we had to stay).

Now it's about to get tested again as the Prado goes in on Friday to check out the auto tranny.

        Cheers

I arranged mine at time of purchase through dealer

3 years additional making 6 in total
            200,000 in total

            Through Swann Insurance
Cost $995 (special price at time)

Policy can be transferred to third partyat cost of $60 during period.

Checked with dealer insurance rep and he can do the extra 3 years for total 200,000kms at cost of $1095 for any Pradopoint members.

Also with someone like swann insurance.
What is their policy on servicing - does it need to be dealer or are other servicing allowed?
How about mods? eg diff lock etc

Got the same policy with Swann insurance a couple of weeks ago...
Still waiting for paperwork to come through though.. I think they stuffed it up a bit... You can service it at any authorised dealer, which means any registered auto business... They only cover genuine parts ...

I have attached their disclosure statement below...

Bitdist, I was told you can take it out anytime before original warranty expires. Check with Chippy on this too .

The exclusions are set out below

                    !-16 below

And remainder plus a bit on servicing.

The definition of "authorised" service facility would need to be checked out but as i am going to use Toyota dealers throughout anyway.

With the 'extended factory warranty' you need to purchase it before pickup of the new vehicle. The other warranty options, I think, you can get anytime within the original factory warranty period. Correct me if Im wrong, but that is how it was explained to me.

Yes, there are Toyota extended factory warranty which can be purchased only at the time of buying a vechicle (new or second hand)

                        http://www.toyota.com.au/TWR/content/static/17994.pdf

Then there are Factory Approved Extended Warranty Insurance
which you can buy for vechicles up to 3 year old and travelled less than
                        90000km.

                        http://www.toyota.com.au/TWR/content/static/17995.pdf

The policy wording for Factory Approved Extended Warranty Insurance is
almost the same as for Swann Extended Warranty Insurance...

                        http://www.toyota.com.au/TWR/content/static/17996.pdf

The main difference so far is the price and the distance covered... The Swann one you can get for around $1095 as Pedro mentioned above. This will cover your car for another 3 years up to 200000km.

The Toyota Warranty Insurance will cost you up to $1650 for 3 years and up to 150000km...

                            Black sheep,
When I took mine out, the dealer told me that swann did underwrite the Toyota ,but they decided to do it themselves and so Swann now issue policies in their own name.

He said the wording of each was practically word for word.
