  • Removing Dashboard Ashtray Compartment Upper Section

    Hi,

I have the electric brake controller mounted under the dashboard on
the driver's side of my 120 Series Prado. My wife says that it the
event of an accident, the brake controller will cause significant leg
injury and has directed me to shift it. But to where?

Under the radio, there is an ashtray. When I remove it, there appears
to be a removable piece of plastic in the upper part of the opening.
I would like to remove it but so far am unable to work out how to do
it. Can anyone help, please, as I think this may well be a suitable
place to put the brake controller?

    Regards
    Glenn

    Glenn,
Check out this thread , I can't help with the mechanics of removal but I see Michael did the job so he can probably assist.

Mine is in the same spot as Pedro's.
Mine is a Tekonsha Prodigy, fits in no need to screw in or remove anything apart from the ashtray itself.
      Too easy :P

        Hi Glenn

As Pedro and Les have both stated, it is dead easy installing in the ashtray slot.

Basically I ran new cabling from my main battery (chose not to use the auxiliary battery) through the grommet in the passenger side of the firewall (removed the inner kick panel to get access) and joined the new cable to the Prodigy harness behind the glovebox. From there the harness runs up and comes out of the ashtray hole.

The Prodigy simply sits in the ashtray slot (sitting in the supplied holder) and locks in place with no screws or anything else, and is very secure. I was planning on removing it when not in use and putting the ashtray in (which would be very easy) but so far I've decided to leave it in place.

The location is really good for either the driver or passenger to access and I think is an ideal location.

This would have to be one of the easier installs in the Prado you could do.

        Hope this helps.

        Cheers
        Michael
