Thanks for that trekrider... from that explanation the ARB points are as good as we can get with an ARB bar.

    Cheers, Toddy

No worries Toddy, Yep, that's about the size of it, although there is a thread on the forum where someone strengthened their ARB 'tow points' but you would probably have to do that before fitting.

Well, i invested in a set of Outback Ideas recovery points and had a go at fitting them on Sunday, what i thought would be a quick one hour job took me 4 in the end! I got the right angle drill chuck as recommended by someone else, and a big drill bit.

Started by removing the bolts for the radiator, not as easy as first thought, had to get a spanner down the back and a socket on the front so meant squishing my arm down between the front bumper and using the socket on an extention through the holes for the bottom bolts. Many scratched fingers and knuckles later the rad was free and pushed back.

I then tried to drill out the first hole but turned out my drill bit i just bought wasnt quite big enough so no amount of reaming was going to get it big enough to get the bolt through, in the end went over a neighbours who lent me a drill bit the right size and the second hole was done in no time. Actually ended up not using the right angle chuck as the larger drill bit didnt fit into the bunnings $15 chuck as it was only up to 10mm. grrr

Touched up the bare metal with anti rust primer then dropped the bolts through and tightened up. Put the rad back on the brackets and job was done! Only dropped two things down into the under engine tray, one was a real git to find!

Shame i cant get these fitted with a soverign toyota bar. Not sure what the bloody hell Im supposed to use. The toyota bullbar uses one of these holes for its brackets ????? At the moment onlyhave the toyota loops hanging there which will get me out of trouble if need be but not acceptable by PP for any trips.. Cheers Steve

This makes me wonder just how strong are the chassis in the 120 prados ??? Points still in tact but chassis ripped off ??

The Prado in the video is a late model, as the "tie down" points are welded through the chassis, next to where after market recovery points would be fitted. Going by the amount off damage to the front and rear of the vehicle, and the fact that the chassis rail was torn off ( cracked maybe ), doesn't that indicate that the "tie down" points on the later model are strong enough to be used as recovery points?

Reckon your probably right Shan, just checked mine in the same spot and its not like there is anything in line with it as such that would casue a stress facture. Possibly he has been jumping to many sand dunes ?? That tow hook in the video is exactly the same as mine goes write through. Cheers Steve

You know Bazza I reckon your dead right. I just looked at mine again and myn is an 05 model GXL and is identical to the one in the video clip, not sure what the difference is your refering to in regards to a late model ?? I dont think the one in the video is younger then 06 ?? unless different specs to here but it doesnt have roof rails like our series two does, but it did have extra fan on the condensor which indicates duel air (would be standard over there you would think ??) but its not a grande (or what ever there equivalent is) Doesnt have privacy glass on rear windows unless its a GX speced up ?? But getting back to recovery points if the ones you buy aftermarket are not rated then whats the difference, as per picture in last post (red recovery points fitted) they are write next to the factory hooks. One for the engineers if possible ?? What is stronger ?? the two bolts holding on the aftermarket ones or the welds on the toyota hooks ?? Also remembering that the ones that are after market go across the chassis rail do they have any thing in between to stop the chassis from getting pulled together ?? I have heard of people fitting these up and not been able to tighten to recomended torque due the chassis pulling together.. If it wasnt for the required aftermarket points required for PP trips I would be quit happy to keep using the ones fitted by toyota.. Either with after market or factory points I would still use an equalizer strap anyway......Cheers Steve

                      Hi Steve,
I meant "late model" as the Prados with the "tie down" point welded through the chassis member rather than welded to the bottom. I was not sure when that method started. I agree that a equalizer strap should allways be used.

This must be the earlier model 120's recovery points, just welded on from underneath, nothing like I have now on the 05 model.Cheers Steve

Steve's second photo shows the problem better:

I could understand fitting after market ones if I had these as there would be a fair amount of stress on these welds but the later ones, totally different setup, as you know going write through and welded from behind as well. As asked in previous post, whats stronger, 2 obviously high tensile bolts or the weld thats on the factory points ?? Hope there is an engineer that may be able to shed some light on the issue........Cheers Steve

Steve, It's even more of a dilemma when you have an ARB bar - the later tie downs look a lot more secure than the ARB 'tow points'. Plus, you can't fit proper recovery points without modifying the bar.

Thats a bad design by ARB, would have thought they had rated recovery hooks built into the bar that would be of some purpose and having to modify a $1500+ bar is crazy. And I thought ARB after market was the ducks guts of after market equipment, wont be long it will also be coming from China......if not already ??? Cheers steve
