  • Leather Steering wheel protection

Does anyone bother with any sort of leather protection products on their steering wheel?

Mine sits in the sun a fair bit and I am slightly concerned about it drying at cracking etc, I also don't want to go putting any sort of product on it that makes it all sticky or worse slippery.

The other alternative is one of those silver reflective covers, but I would probably end up forgetting to put it on anyway.

    Cheers

LOL, I did wonder if that would come up, BUT it was 30 degrees here yesterday...what prompted me to ask having grabbed it when it was hot yesterday - wont mention they have snow forecast for Friday.

Seriously though, here in Tassie supposedly we have higher levels of UV, something to do with latitude and O-zone layer or something, and as it is the UV that does the damage...

How about a window tint on the front windscreen to cut the UV altogether. I've got a very slightly tinted front windscreen and it makes the world of difference on a hot, sunny day. It cuts out 99% of the UV and isn't noticeable to constable care.

This will save the entire dash from a lifetime of scorching Aussie sun damage.

You may want to check on this, I'm pretty sure any form of tint on a wind screen is illegal and hence voids your insurance. It's also the sort of thing that gets checked after a crash

            Edit: http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/21099.asp

Rules for tinting of windscreens No tinting is permitted on the windscreen except on:

The area above the highest point of the windscreen that is swept by a windscreen wiper The upper 10% of the windscreen.

Yeah, I'm aware of the laws but the quality of the film is top-shelf which makes it crystal clear. It is only a 95% transmission tint so it isn't noticable when looking at the vehicle and the main function of it is to cut the UV.

mm...will have to give some of the local tinters a call and see what they say....other than that, the silver cover sounds the go.

Richo - humidity made it into the mid 80's I think - was a pretty one off day for Nov, we get about half a dozen a year when it gets a bit mad. The thing with Tassie heat, and anyone who has visited in Jan/Feb will tell you, the heat is just different down here, a 27-30 degree day down here is pretty much the same comfort level as a 30-35 degree day in Syd - just something to do with the way the heat feels I guess. I was in 42 in Melb back in about 1990, and I would still rather that than the 2-3 days a year we 35 we get down here.

                Cheers

                  Hi Rod

Great info as we are doing a 5 week Tassie tour in February 2013, so we will definately be looking to hook up with the Taswegian PP'ers.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

I use good old-fashioned Dubbin. Give the wheel a good wipe with a damp cloth, dry, rub in the Dubbin with a soft cloth. Leave for a while to penetrate, wipe off and buff. Afterwards, it feels just a little, mmm... grippy for a short while. Not greasy or sticky. Works for me! Your mileage may vary...

Richo - Feb is one of the most stable time of the year weather wise, last 2 weeks of Jan first 2-3 of Feb is normally when we get the warmest weather, plenty of days in the higher 20's low 30's which can last out till the end of Feb. Biggest tip - bring and use sunscreen, especially at that time of year.

Rang a couple of tinting places and they wouldn't even discuss anything on a windscreen.

Also like the cover idea, but will as a few people said in that link, needs to be nice and tight, hate the idea of anything loose or with uneven bits.

PRH - I had wondered about something as simple as that or sno seal or nikwax might just have to give it a go, if I leave it in he sun it will definitely soak in, a good buff to take off the reside and I would think it would be OK.

                        Thanks for the suggestions guys

                        Cheers
