Have I been blind previously or is the Prado "Standard" a new spec level below the GX? I thought the GX was the bog standard job.. Certainly interesting for a good bush pig ride!

HI all,my first post,a long time viewer of this site.
I viewed one of these new standard models the other day.Similiar to the original GX model ie skinny wheels/tyres black bumpers etc,but only comes as a 5 seater with no option of rear most seats.It Still has option packs available like the GX though and would make a good base for a kitted out touring unit for a sub 50k price and does come in auto.I was interested in this model until i discovered the missing back seat so now will settle for a GX although i don't like the fancy side flare trims etc.
thanks
RussellNew 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear

Rally1,
Agree you don't have a lot of tyre options but the ones I know of are reasonably aggressive:-
Dunlop Grandtrek AT2 (Silica based) Stiff sidewall constrution? 50/50 on/off road.
Yokohama Geolander A/T-S (Silica based)
Don't know of any more & that size could be hard to come by when a long way from home. :?:
Cheers,

I believe this model was introduced because it is used a lot in mines etc... It gives them a good workhorse without all the fancy bits. They would get run into the ground too, no one would want to buy it if they knew where it came from!

I have a 2004 GX now with 235/70 Cooper ATRs on the original wheels. These are a little larger than the original Grandtreks and while not LT are designated RE, supposedly the same carcase as LT but not the same tread depth. They are great so far 8000 km on normal driving.
I have 265/70 STTs on other wheels for hard trips.2004 GX TD Manual + ABS + Cruise + Tint
Sovereign bar + Tabor winch; dual batteries
ATS suspension; 235/70R17 ATRs on std rims;
265/70R17 STTs on steel rims for trips;
Brown Davis protection plates; 20L SS water tank; Bushman fridge; Power shower; drawers

With the 100 series gone and the 200 not being ofered in a base model I think the Standard is the answer for the mining industury.
Safety is a big issue in the mines and on numerous occasions it has been raised that the 76series (replacement for the standard 100series) has no option for airbags.
The response was we are working with Toyota to fix the problem.
So no rear seats availablity of all of the safety options, could it be that Toyota have slipped this model in to make up for the mistake of not offering airbags on the 76?GXL D4D AUTO Option pack more to follow & Camprite TL8s

I saw a Prado standard, driving side by side on a double lane road with a Mazda CX-7.
I did a double take because the Prado was noticeably narrower and smaller than the CX-7 - I've always thought that the Prado is a relatively large four wheel drive but alongside the Mazda, it just looked boxy and small.
Its dawned on me that the Prado always looked bigger than what it is actually due to the bulging wheel arch flares and the wider bumpers on the more up spec vehicles. But in fact, the width of the roof will give a true indication of the amount of room inside the vehicle, and not by the size of the bulgy plastic add on sides.
Anyway, my point is that mining companies may find the Standard model better as it can go through narrower tunnels. And for the offroaders that do not mind scratches, the black plastic bumpers may handle the abuse from woody and scratchy shrubs better.

Could have just been an older GX.
The GX with flares is only recent.2003 V6 GXL, Mickey Thompson MTZ's, Safari Snorkel, ARB Winch Bar, OME Suspension 2" lift, GME TX3420

I just ordered the 08 plated Standard 3.0D Auto,...
Although I haven't seen one in flesh yet, only a single toyota publicity shot, that has been shown everywhere..... Anyone has any other pictures ?
I assume it will look identically to the European slim body 120 series....
In Europe they even have a 3 door version of the 120 series, which is a swb version on the slim body design.....2008 D4D AUTO PRADO, COOPERS STT
