  • Painting Silver Dash

    Hey Everyone,

Well I was reading somewhere on this site on fixing up the silver dash bits in my car, as some of them are scratched and are annoying me! I was going to buy new ones or go to the wreckers however they may only get scratched again so instead I am going to attempt to paint them!

I am not very good with this kind of thing but does anyone know the best paint to buy and the best way of going about it? I'm in Melbourne in the Eastern Suburbs so if anyone knows somewhere near here where I can go and get the paint from that would be awesome.

I may end up buying some if I stuff it anyway :-?

As they're already painted, I would lightly key them with a scotchbrite pad then a silver top coat. Should be able to get it all from Supercheapauto.

hey paddy81 want to do the same myself. My answer to your question is instead of replacement(there's nothing wrong with besides scratches) is take them to a smash repairs and get them re-painted that way they can bake the paint on.Do it yourself and it might not look real good unless your good on a spray gun. i'm going to get my silver bits colour coded.Food for thought man...

Due to the fact these trim pieces only have a light top coat it's easy to just give them u rub back with 1200 wet & dry just to get a good clean surface. If you need to get rid of deep scratches maybe a bit of spray putty to fill and sand to smooth out. Then just get a can of touch up paint from super cheap or autobarn or the like and give them 4 or 5 covering coats with half hour between each. If you want a good wearing then you can top cout with clear but you will then get a glossy surface not a satin like the factory.
Advantage painting them yourself is you can use whatever colour you want to personalize your truck
Good luck and if you need anymore info let us know - will be keen to hear how you go

I did mine a few years ago. Got a spray can colour matched at Eastern Auto paints in Canterbury Rd Bayswater. Rub down and prime with plastic primer first. Paint supplier will advise you. Otherwise panel beater would be able to colour match and spray but would cost heaps more.
          Cheers....Wayne
