  • Rear bumper repair

    Hi guys,
I was 4wding through the dunes just north of Geraldton yesterday and I have somehow managed to rip my rear bumper in two places near the exhaust! Does anyone know of someone how does "plastic welding" either in Geraldton? (or Perth or even Bunbury 'cause I'm heading that way soon).

Can the rear bumper be plastic welded?

Is there some way of reinforcing the rear bumper to stop this happening again?

    Help?

Sounds like someone just got the perfect excuse to get dual wheel carrier.

Like Syzprado, I sustained some "more than acceptable" damage to the rear passenger side of the vehicle. No panel damage, only the Plastic flairs and rear bumper. Has anyone sustained equal or worse damage and had repair buy a touch up mob? I'm thinking these repairs would most likely be more than my excess (500 clams), therefore getting the repair done through my insurance company and getting replacement bumper etc...

      Thoughts?

p.s. Rear carrier is not an option

Take it off, fibreglass on underside and a bit of bog on the outside? Touch up with spray can of the correct colour. Neil

I doubt whether fiberglass will stick to the plastic. Most panelbeaters should be able to plastic weld bumpers(it's not hard). If it's torn in a couple of places then it'll probably cost more to fix than just buying a new one. Get a price from your local panelbeater.

I emailed pics of the damage through to my local Touch Up Guy franchisee, who came back with an estimate of around $450. So with that in mind, I will put it through my insurance for the $400 excess ( discounted with my good track record) and get what parts require replacing replaced. The only real advantage of going through the Touch Up Guy was that the job would be completed in a couple of hours at my place of work vs a couple of Days through AAMI. Never had a problem with AAMI before, so I may as well get something out of them for all the money I've paid in premiums over the years. And this way I know that anything that requires replacing will be replaced as opposed to patched (the mud flap was already a bit worn and will need replacing now...)

Shame it wasn't the front bar. There are always cheap ones going on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FRONT-BUM...item3cc49afd09

You just have to wait for one to come up in your area. I paid $0.99 for mine (actually come to think of it I didn't pay anything as he wouldn't take any money!) and mine came with perfect foglights.

Just dropped the car in to the repairer. All damaged parts are being replaced with genuine parts (even getting a new side step which sustained a small scratch!) and ready for pick up tomorrow! Awesome service so far

Got a call at 11AM this morning that all work was completed! Picked it up and every thing looks great. Yes all new, genuine parts so gotta be happy with that! I was concerned that the wiring of my trailer socket might've been over looked as I had moved it into the actual bumper bar, so I got underneath and all that was outstanding was that it wasn't cable tied like I had it. No problem, an easy fix. The only thing I have noticed which I may take it back for is the Plastic panel in the boot that runs along the top of the bumper bar, no longer fits as snug as I remember. I would say that the clips/lugs have been stretched during the bar removal process. I've tried to correct but cant get it to fit as snug as I would like as there's movement in the panel. Would someone with a 120 mind having a quick look and advise how snug a fit this panel is on theirs please? (see pic below....)

Yeah that does look a bit gappy to me. I've had my rear bumper off several times and my cover still fits good. They always seem a little loose but it should be a neat fit. Might be just not clipped in properly . Panelbeater speaking here

Cheers Whitey. I think I'll drop it back into the repairer this morning to have a look

Edit: Been to the repairer and they are ordering a replacement molding in for me...
