  • D4D Donor ~ transplant

    Hi Guys,
I was driving to work today and saw a new Hilux D4D on a traytop. It was all smashed up in the rear but the front doors and forward were still perfect which got me thinking.......
I wonder how much trouble it would be to drop a D4D into a 2003 120 Prado? Anyone put any thought into this or heard of it? It would be costly I expect but sounds like a goer.
    What do y'as think?

Slightly different motor to the Prado so would be down on power.
I would imagine it would be a fairly costly exercise.

I'd be going down the road of a chip and exhaust for the TD. That should get you about the same performance as a standard Prado D4D (which is better than a standard D4D Hilux)
As for fuel efficiency the D4D Prado gets a lots of its fuel economy from the 5/6 speed boxes so you'd be looking at swapping your grearbox as well - not sure if its the same gearboxes int he Hilux.
In all, using a the Hilux D4D (or even a Prado D4D) would be a costly swap and you could achieve the same results, a lot cheaper and not have all the headaches buy improving the TD engine.

        Sorry to confuse.....
I didnt mean donate the hilux engine, I meant a Prado engine.
I saw a wrecked Hilux that inspired the thought.....

          MT,

There is a lot of talk with swapping out the petrol 4.0 for a diesel. Toyota does not offer any diesel power plants here in the US and there is a need for them in the FJ with the torque and power.

It is on my list of wanted mods along with a solid axle swap.

Sorry I missed your reply Ben. A fair amount of money involved in all that mate. Then again, I cant see Toyota going back to solid axles ever (Prado at least), so it may be your only options. However, I can see the d4d may have merit.

            Back on topic though....

If you saw a wrecked D4D 120 in a wreckers, and they wanted a fair price for the front cut..... would you be tempted??
