  • D4D Manual Reviews (Web or personal experience wanted!)

    Hey Guys,

I've been searching google trying to find a review on the D4D in manual guise. I just can't find a decent one.

So are there any drivers that could give me some feedback on the manual D4D. The shift feel, is it truck like... the missus will kill me if it is, offroad performance etc.

Sorry to sound harsh but I want to hear from people that have actually got one or driven one. ops:

I'm unable to get a drive of one in the forseeable future so this is the only way I'll get a decent feel for one without driving it!

    Thanks in advance,

    Crammy.

Thanks TP but there's nothing which really answers my questions though. I'm not after Auto Vs Manual. Just after real world experience on the manual. There doesn't seem to be much on the manual at all.

      Cheers

        Hi Crammy,
If you can wait until the third week in November, hopefully I will have mine by then.

I will give you a rundown of the D4D manual in detail, but I reckon that there may be a few around at our Local dealers by then also.

I have been driving manual diesel 4wd's for about 28+ years

          Crammy,

I have just picked up my '07 GXL D4D manual, I have covered 270km so it won't be an extensive review. I have upgraded from a Nissan X-Trail.

Initial impression - very quite, suspension a bit stiffer from the X-Trail but am sure it will soften up. Engine pulls from 1600-1700rpm and would out accelerate the Nissan easily. The engine revs very freely and willingly from idle and without the distinct diesel hum you could mistaken it for a petrol. RPM is 2300 at 100kph, and feels very sure footed on road. Over takes with ease without dropping down to 5th (90kph - 130kph).

The gearbox - My wife finds 1, 2 and 3 lower geared, as expected, but once in 3rd it is like a rocket ship. We are changing gears at or below 2500rpm. The feel of the box is not like a truck but not like a sports car either. It has more of a direct mesh than that of the Nissan X-Trail with a similiar throw.

Dealer only gave me approx 40L of fuel and we are still have half way to quarter tank left. So am guessing around 10L / 100km.

Dual zone A/C is a godsend, wife can be warm and I can be cool. This is also for the rear separate controls

Haven't taken it offroad yet so can't comment.

Will report again in a couple of weeks to see if my opinion has change but at this stage you can not wipe the smile off my face with the driveability of it.

          Hope this helps

            Hi Crammy,

I have had my D4D manual for about 3 months now and have done almost 6,000km. I have never had an auto 4wd so I cannot compare it. Like all of my previous Prados (3 petrol and 1 diesel) the gear change is pleasant but hardly sporty. It is not anything like a truck, but at the same time feels strong. The gear change itself is precise but very light with no hint of weakness in synchros etc. I certainly don't get sick of changing gears, with mainly 3rd, 4th and 5th gears being used in normal driving.

My only gripe is that I find the accelerator a bit hesitant for the first fraction of a second of input from idle which is ok in 1st gear but a bit annoying when taking off from a near stop in second. Maybe I just need to practice a bit more, but I will bring it up with the dealer at the 10k service.

Over rough ground (rocks and washouts) it idles very nicely with good control and nice low gearing which keeps all things down to below walking pace when required. Steep downhill is brilliant with extremely good engine breaking keeping everything going straight. Its great in sand, but then again so is an auto. It all depends how you drive it and how well you know your vehicle. I spent many years driving on WA beaches and never once got stuck in a manual, although I must admit an auto takes much of the guess work out of it.

I don't know if any of this is helpful, but I can assure you that they are very nice to drive if you don't mind changing gears.

There was discussion on it quite recently, but I guess with all the new pointless threads it becomes a bit jumbled in the search feature and impossible to find what you want..

                Clifton,

I bet you can't wait! I spoke to the dealer on Friday and he showed me the incoming stock and they were all petrol auto's so there was nothing in the diesel... When I say nothing in diesel the list he had were of vehicles that weren't sold. I'm jealous you're getting yours in three weeks and I'll probably have to wait 5 months!

I look forward to hearing about the new beast.

                Bomber-74 & Neil,

Thanks heaps for your input. You both had the info that I was chasing, it certainly sounds like you're both enjoying your manuals. 8)

                Bomber-74,

I know what you mean about dual zone climate... My missus and I often fight over the temperature in the car... Bloody women and always being cold!

                Neil,

The problem with your throttle response would probably be from the electronic throttle, there could be some tweaks that the service department maybe be able to do or it may be fixed with a tune (chip). I know some of the newer commodore V8's have a slight delay on initial throttle response due to the electronic throttle.

                Team Piggy,

It'd be nice to have a sticky for threads along these lines, specific to gearbox combo in the relative sections (Petrol & Diesel). I know what you mean about being everywhere, I spent ages searching through unrelated threads that seemed to have pockets of info in them! At least new users like me, will be able to find them easily, and stop making pointless threads! :P

Guys with the manuals, can you comment about driveability in LOW range?

I've often avoided the manual in an offroader and am a firm believer of an auto, especially behind a turbo diesel.

First and foremost is the turbo lag issue - in an auto, the torque converter allows the engine revs to build up sufficiently to allow turbo spool up, so you get into the power band quicker.

Anyway, back to the low range question on manuals - is it more "jerky" to drive if you were going over bumpy terrain and your accelerator pedal motion becomes less finessed?

Secondly, are the synchros still able to keep up with the gear changes in low range, or do you find that you sometimes start grating gears?

Curious minds want to know....

Gidday Crammy, I assume you've tried Pacific Toyota and Chano's at Atherton for a test drive? I guess if you're desperate, you could jump in the car to Townsville? They must be selling the demos before they even become demos!

No mate no.....a manual behind a good Diesel is the only way to go in the ruff stuff, nothing beats the downhill performance & you are always in the gear you want. If you have the skill to fully utilise a manual, it is way in front.

My experience comes from owning a HJ60 5 speed Diesel 1985 vintage. Once to cape York, twice to Fraser & almost weekly to the Snowys. Remember it had a lot less power & torque than the modern turbo charge Diesels.

Now I have an auto, because the car spends 95% of its time on the bitumen. The auto is good offroad, but the manual would be better - the only exception, might be driving in sand.

I have an Auto Diesel as a best all round solution.

                      Cheers

                        Hey Hodgy,

I've tried John Cole in Atherton. I haven't rang Townsville as apparently there's no stock up this way at all. I found one in Brissie but I was too late on it. Rang up today and it's sold STF. It's a Manual D4D fresh off the boat and was snapped up immediately. These things are selling like hotcakes.

                          Hi Laurance

For what it is worth, this is my experience. Others may have a different opinion.

Turbo lag is non-existent (or at least not a problem) in low range as the gearing is low enough to negate any shortfall in torque below 1600. I have noticed however that the D4D is not quite as good in 2nd low off idle as my old 90 diesel, especially on very steep climbs.

As far as the jerkiness is concerned, an auto will always be smoother and more controllable in rough going, but in saying that I don't find the manual a problem either. The use of the clutch and/or brake is occasionally required when negotiating very rough territory although with feet off everything it is amazing how much engine braking there is when dropping over ledges and things.

The accelerator doesn't seem to cause any jerkiness over rough ground although that might be because I always brace myself to prevent too much movement.

I must admit that it is possible to catch out the syncro on 1st gear if you try to grab it too quickly in low range, however its certainly not any worse than any other 4wd I've had.
