I have for years wondered why the big companies didnt try to target that soccer mom market. Now they may have made a small inroad to it with that add on TV that shows all the 80 series ect pulling up with air brakes and horns at school, and then the woman turns up in a Ford Territory, looking like a lady, rather than a truck driver. "Nice Rig" "Yeah,...hmpf"
That add erks me to tears, but could be the start of changing the minds of these women, and their need for a large people mover.
(I am trying very hard to stay politically correct)
    cheers

No Diesel, No low range, No central diff lock, No long range tanks. Different beast. If you have a Kluger and think you are able to get by, you are not going to the places where the above is needed. On the other hand I took a Mazda Tribute with camper trailer across the Gulf with no probs, but I have used all of the above after I purchased the Prado and like the security, the flexibility and the new range of places able to be visited without concern. Buy a Kluger but realise the limits.

The Kluger isn't actually marketed as a 4WD is it? I can't say I've actually seen any TV ads for them. I suppose there could be a danger of someone not doing their research and buy a Kluger / Territory thinking it a fully capable offroad vehicle. I mean, they do look like a 4WD. For may people, who really aren't motoring savvy those looks alone might convince them they are buying a fully capable 4WD.

Serious family movers have been somewhat limited for years, a fact that Ford obviously realized with the Territory. You had station wagons, Vans, and then well ... Landcriusers. I've never liked station wagons at all, no real concrete reasons, I just don't like them. Vans are dangerous, there's no way I'd put my family in a van. Any sort of collision and there's just not enough body to absorb any impact. So I can completely understand soccer mums wanting a Landcruiser as a family transport. However now the Kluger fills the larger more robust people mover nicely. An obvious evolution now that you stop and think about it. So as long as people who buy them realize their limits as said above, my opinion is they would be fantastic when used for what they are designed for.

Personally I dont have a problem with the soccer mums using 4wds. It means that sales stay high so the Government would be less inclined to try imposing sanctions on them. It also means that there are many great second hand ones on the market available. The one we bought my wife may see the dirt 3-4 times a year and I probably could have got away with a Kluger or similiar but the way I see it is if I want to use it I can.

I am glad that the person who owned ours did as its in immaculate condition and I couldnt be happier 8) I like being the one to put the first scratch on  :P

most 4wding comes down to the driver... im sure i could get a kluger further than someone driving a prado that has never been 4wding..

they are light duty off road vehicles.. just as a prado is more of a medium duty off roader. and say a 75 series ute is a heavy duty off roader.

Iteresting the latest Overlander magazine has a four level rating system for offroad vehicles.
Kluger is in the botom level (suitable for dirt roads) and Prado is in the top (serious offroad) enough said.

one thing i notice missing from here is wether the kluger sits as high on the road as the prado, ie is the visibility as good as the prado, my wife wanted one of those holden adventra's purely because of the elevated seat position, luckily i convinced her an ex government supercharged calais with 30k on the odo was the go. Must admit though even up here the prado is a real mums bus.

Not wanting to start a new thread... will use this one as it sort of relates to my query.

I am seriously considering my options next year when I upgrade my current Kluger. I've been more than impressed with it but have been thinking about whether I should get another (Grande) or go with a Prado VX instead.

We already have our 120 series fully kitted out for heavy duty trips, etc. This would give us another option. Maybe a petrol version, or another diesel.

We need a vehicle capable of carrying at least five persons (plus 1 or 2 extras) including luggage. And the ability to tow too.

I love the Prado... and would love to own both a 120 series (the best ever) and the newer 150 series too. Maybe a his and hers..

We use a Kluger at work and are constantly frustrated with the LACK of 'usable room' in the back to carry stuff.

The Prado shits on it for luggage room if this is of concern?
