  • Acceleration on 2004 Diesel 5 speed

    Hey Guys,

    Picked up the rig last weds, Very Happy with my buy.

    This is my first diesel so unsure what to expect,

    but when i accelerate through gears i find anything past half pedal has no more acceleration, Is This just how the diesel engine rolls? '

    KZTE? Yep..you should get a squirt from the turbo and then after about 3k revs nothing ha ha

      Don't let the laughing get to you zutta. The 1KZ will be still running long after those D4D boys have popped an injector.

        ive got 200000km on mine now and going like clock work, one of the best things you can do to let them breath is to put an aftermarket dump pipe and free flowing exhaust on, just make sure if you do go down this path that the installer puts a flex join in after the dump pipe flange or you will find you get cracked welds around the flange of the dump pipe where it bolts on to the turbo, this will help get rid of the dead spot up near 3000 rpm and also will spool the boost up earlier ie full boost buy about 1800 rpm. cheers samo

          Funny you mention about the exhaust samo. Seems Manta don't put a flex joint in their exhaust for the diesel - wonder if anyone has had any issues. Not that I want to turn this into another exhaust thread.

                I like my kz... its done 240kms and i jusy removed the safari dtronic to hopefully get further life out of the beast... i did however fit an electronic boost controller and tweaked it op to 12 and half PSI. It drives much better now, better acceleration and better towing....

                  Did removing your dtronic make much difference?

                    My 2005 D4-d doesn't have any flexi.
                    But it does have some "get up and go",
                    Some thing you 1KZ tractor drivers wouldn't know about.

                        It's one thing to be able to go well down hills in the tractor but for every down there's an equal up hill and I was sick of being passed uphill by trucks when I was towing. D4D in 150 series has fixed that. It has far more torque (or as you quaintly put it "talk" lol) Must say your naming of them as the tractor is appropriate - compared to the 150 series they sure do sound and perform like a tractor. Didn't notice till I moved up. Mind you for their time, particularly when they first came out they were a jolly fine vehicle, but like everything, time stands still for no vehicle.

                          LOL. All good I'm used to it,

                          Coming from a V6 commy and it really isn't that bad now i have found the sweet spot for gear changes and getting max power.

                          Nothing wrong with old school, sometimes new doesn't necessarily mean better :P

                          The old beast had its first recovery the other day, had to pull a new v8 prado off the beach
