  • D4D Blowing smoke on startup.

Hello All, only new to PP but have received wealth of info so far.
I have a 12/06 D4D manual Prado which I bought from new, I have not had any troubles with the car and have now 115000 alms on it. Have fitted snorkel, Uni filter, mandrel bent exhaust and DP chip. The car gets used as a daily run around, and also used for holiday trips.
The problem I am having is that on start up occasionally it puffs out a plume of grey smoke. So far I cannot figure out what is causing it. Have taken the car to local diesel injector place and they did diagnostics and said everything ok with pump/ injectors etc. It only seems to do it when the car is hot, but not every time you start it when its hot. Now here's the kicker, my sister has exactly the same prado but without all the mods and has done 180000klm, her car does the same thing but also stalls. I haven't done the timing belt yet but my sisters car has. My only other idea is the EGR, as I have read that they have a tendency to sludge up the intake manifold. I have had a few of the major services done at Toyota and the rest I have done myself regularly at 10k intervals. As the car is out of warranty I do not like taking it to Toyota as they always seem to charge heaps for little in return.
Any help on this matter would be muchly appreciated!!

Sounds like your injector seals are stuffed. Just had to replace the ones in our 2007 Prado which has done 102,000 k's. Very common problem which will destroy your engine after crystalising the oil and blocking up the oil pickup. Got mine fixed in time. Pre-2008 d4d's had copper injector seals at the base which blow out. Apparently the aluminium ones they use now fix this. Bloody hope so cause I just ordered a new SR5 Hilux.

Also ..... Toyota are well aware of the problem as they told me what has to be done !!!!!! This doesn't seem to warrant a recall though eh ?? Cost me $900.00 to fix by my own mechanic.

          I'm confused.

My car has smoke on startup when its parked for a few days. I think its when its pointing downhill.

I have had the injectors replaced by Baileys about 18 months ago. What may be causing the issue do you think?

Think it best you get the injector values checked and speak to Baileys. They have at least a 2-3 year warranty.

Well # 1 is well out of spec - # 4 is close and the others are average.

Mate, check my thread 'oh what a feeling - injector deals failed'
I'm fighting Toyota right now over this issue as mine resulted in a seized engine 👍

That is the classic result of failed injector seals (sheets) where the contaminated oil from the rocker area has then dropped down into the sump and blocked the oil pickup. This has then restricted oil flow to the top of the engine wearing rings etc. Have you looked up through the sump hole and inspected the screen on the pickup?

Thanks for the comments Bushbasher and SlidinStu. Its safely sitting at Baileys. They are very aware of the issue and are confident It will be running by Tuesday night.

Thanks to the forum (and Overlander mag which has an article just at the right time.) It sounds like it could have been a much sadder story.

Its interesting that they put the newest seals in a year ago and one appears to have failed. I will have the full story soon.

Lets see if it is the seals/seats. But your right it should not happen.
If that's what it is, then it goes to show you can still get one.
                            Faulty seal/seat maybe?
Over torqued? I doubt it, I've seen them re-used & over torqued & they don't leak.
                            Under torqued? Forgot that one?
                            Well who knows, lets see.
