  • Traction control

Today I went for a little drive in the national park just for a look around and went on one or two tracks but didn't need to engage 4wd so everytime it got a little slippery there were all sorts of horrid noises from from the dash and feet area of the drivers side, I then engaged 4wd and the hill decent control and it was horrendous and it sounds like the car is bottoming out..

Do they all do this and can anyone explain what the noises and clunks are all about?

Yeah mate all normal, its the abs unit controlling the wheels stopping them from spinning when the traction control is activating, the down hill assist is the same, banging and clanging and carrying on, should try a 200 series there noisier lol. Down hill assist also works in reverse but you must be in low range 1st for it to work if moving forward or low range reverse if in reverse...Works extremely well, I tried it in my mates vx. Some say they are known to overheat on long runs down hill ??? cant say I have seen it myself but would imagine it would do it as its using the brakes/abs unit to control it so would heat up like if you kept hitting your brakes, same thing I suppose...............either way sounds like every thing is working fine.......Cheers Steve Just rereading you post and you dont mention low range ?? I will have to try my mates again I'm positive it didnt work in high range, would make sense if you are turning the dac control on means you are on some thing steep and need assistance to keep the vehicle at a crawl which would also mean you should be using low range ??? were you in low range or high ??

I know that with my 120 Grande I can put the Prado in neutral, hit the DAC and take the foot off the brake and she'll (noisily), creep down the descent...

Thanks Steve, I was in low range... I figured like you that it had to be in low range so that's the only way I tried it...

Good to know that's what it does.

ive had the same trouble towing a van on windy roads, scared the shit out of me. it also made that horrid noise and beeping on a gravel road the other day, is there any way of disengaging it?

As far as I know two different systems the first been traction control the second been stability control the beeping would be stability control if anything like my old 90 series. The only way to disengage the stability is lock centre diff lock which wont hert on a gravel road (wouldn't do it on sealed road). Unfortunately you cant turn off the traction control at all which can be a pain. Its only now on the 150's you can control both systems which is a great idea. If you had the stability control cut in on you that was probably a good thing as you may have been going a tad quick and the system was possibly picking up it been unstable ??? I only ever had the stability cut in on me but that was because I wanted it to so I could try it out. I come into a corner near where I live and gave it a bootfull, it started to drift towards the gutter when the stability cut in a kept me straight must say worked extremely well.............Cheers Steve

if youv'e heard the beeping noise from the dash then the car has just saved your ass . ive tested it extensively and it works brilliantly . the DAC system is an utter waste of time , mostly the hill is not steep enough and you have to accelerate or its too steep and the abs takes over anyway . turn the stability control off by hitting the centre diff lock .

To be able to reply to your question, I guess it will be useful for folk to know exactly what vehicle you are driving, and what features/options it has, else there may be some guesswork involved. I have a very good idea, and it is described quite well in your owners manual...something like (from memory) "The grinding noises and vibrations when this feature operates are normal, the vehicle is not broken." I had to smile when I read that statement, but its true, it shudders and vibrates like something is broken incertain situations when this fetaure is engaged or operates....but, just to be sure, I will reserve any further comments until I know exactly what you are driving etc etc.

Hi Kav, I may be wrong but by hitting the centre diff lock button, doesnt this then lock the centre diff lock ?? not advisable on sealed roads ?? Im not 100% sure on the 120's with this aid but I know for sure on my 90 Grande if I hit the diff lock button it definately disengaged the stability control but engaged the centre diff lock...........Cheers Steve
