  • cruise control mods 120 series

    Hi all
Has anyone been able to modify the cruise control on their 120 so that you dont have to reset the speed after going through towns, (just hit resume and it goes back to the previous selected speed) this would have to be one of the most frustrating things about the car IMO.

I guess you must have a Diesel then - should have bought a V6 (resume works fine) I've not heard of anyone finding a mod for this on the Diesel.

Just curious, does the Diesel have the same Cruise control stalk as the V6 and resume doesn't work or is the stalk different?

The resume function won't work if you go below 40km/hr, is this not the case for the V6? seems strange that they would be so different?

I agree that it is frustrating, its been talked about before but I don't recall anyone having an answer. I think one guy fitted an after market cruise to a GX that didn't have it from the factory and that worked well, always an option I guess, remove the factory cruise and replace it with after market.

      Cheers Andrew

On the V6 dropping below 40km/hr doesn't reset the cruise - once you get above 40km/hr again you just hit resume and off it goes (with a slight delay).

This is something that has really annoyed me about the Prado, no other car with cruise I have had behaves this way. I wish there was a simple fix.

Interestingly I was driving our Rav yesterday and checked the cruise on that, same as the Prado, won't resume from below 40k. The cruise wanting to hunt gears, especially when towing is another thing that is a pain.

                Cheers Andrew

They also dont eat injectors and seem to outlast diesels ( without any major engine issues )

Yes definately a petrol thing. My petrol will resume from about 43k. My 90 diesel was the same would not resume and yet my petrol 90 did, so definately a diesel thing. I wonder of the manual V6 is the same. I normally dont resume anyway unless Im up around the original set speed other wise if you have it set for say 100 but you have dropped back to 60 then hit resume to back to the 100 the bloody thing kicks back how ever many gears it needs then revs the shit out of each gear till its back to set speed, not real good for economy but if say 80/90 then hit resume its not as agro trying to get back to the 100. Towing or hilly areas forget the cruise, its a pain in the arse for hunting and also over shooting the set speed, kicking back gears reving etc. On the flats or very very gentle hills its ok. My commodore had the best cruise, was very accurate, didnt hunt, and would resume the set speed with very little reving or hunting of gears. Toyota cruise in any toyota unless on flats or vwery gentle hills is a pain in the arse, not sure how the 200 series are...........Cheers Steve

""My V6 forgets the set speed if you go below 40. Pain in the neck."" thats strange, I can come to a complete stop, take off again and it will resume to the set point 100% for sure have tried it and did it a while ago when I thought I got pinged for speeding (another story). If you turn the ignition off or turn the cruise off then it will need resetting but while ever the car is running it will resume from just over 43k even if I've come to a complete stop.........Cheers Steve

Steve, what year is yours? I wonder if it is something they changed on later models, perhaps when they went to the 5 speed slush box, or changed to the obd2 computer?
Even my manual says it will reset the speed below 40. It's caught me a few times, slow down for roadworks, then accelerate back to 100, hit resume on the cruise, and it starts slowing down.
Another thing I've noticed is that if you don't manually accelerate back to your cruise speed, eg after slowing for an 80 zone, it will drop the gear right back and rev the guts out of the engine until it gets back to cruise speed. My Holden is much more civilised - you can resume the cruise as soon as you leave the 80 and it will accelerate gently back to cruise speed. This different behaviour took a bit of adjusting to when I got the Prado after 5 years in the Holden.
