  • Back end probs

Hi guys, been lurking for a while and am amazed at the knowledge and help around....wow. Anyways, I have a 2005 Grande V6, bog standard, 190,000k,s and have an issue on rough gravel tracks. Had a look in search and couldn't find anything on it, so hope others may have come across same issue and what they have done about it.
Backend kicks out if corrugations get too rough. Have had a few times when this has happened and scared the cr@p out of me. Traction kicks in along with beeps and all sort of noises. Other than that it's a magic car to drive.
Cheers in advance for your help.

Dampeners (shocks) on the way out?

Tyre pressure too high. Should be around 30 PSI,

    Bushes, or

    Your just going too fast

Welcome to air bag suspension combined with traction control and high tyre pressures. Letting the tyres down to around 28PSI depending on the tyre types and tread and severity of corrugations (i.e. just a guide) will help.

Winni's comments are valid and some more info would help, but suffice to say fast and gravel without adjusting tyre pressure is a recipe for more than bouncing.

As the owner of a Grande I believe air bag suspension is not the best for gravel, especially corrugated or pot-holed or otherwise rough, others may disagree.

Ive seen the way MLC drives - flat out on the highway and gravel roads and not fast enough on big dunes!

Must be a grande drivers trait...
        Cheers

Apologies for the riff raff and their "by the by" comments. They take every opportunity to cut me down because I have a Grande with a heap of mods and I am a very skilled 4wder having saved the best of the best from certain catastrophy at various times on 4wd outings. It's the tall poppy syndrome in full swing.

You have probably worked it out already but there are some bad apples on this forum that no nothing and unlike myself never contribute anything positive to this forum. They are, in no particular order: 120D4D, Madkore, AJ120, AMTS, Rev and Matty&Loz. If you ignore them the quality of information will be without question.

Again, on behalf of all of them please accept my apologies and rest assured, Grande's do ok off road, they just drive differently to the rear spring boys in their poor person option packs.

And Michael, my 120 made it up the big dune on border track with over a tonne of trailer in tow while certain 120's and 150's NOT towing were left bogged to the axles. Bloody tuff rig of mine!

Very true MLC. Yes, when we see you in a precarious situation or tempoarily immobilized, everyone is so busy laughing that they can't drive and as a result they don't end up in the same predicament. That way you save us all.

ROFL.... Anyways... MLC I hear ya brother. Got heaps when I bought Grande. For a car with this type of rear setup, it has surprised me and others who have poo, pooed it. Speed isn't a factor as it has happened traveling from 30k - 80kmh's. Could possibly pin it down to too hard tyre pressures. Might also have a look at the damper situation, but how do you test adjustable shocks?
                  Thanks for the tips guys.

Funny stuff..... but to be serious.....

I think you need some very high quality shocks, Maybe Raw 4x4, made by Powerdown (who make most of the o.e.m and aftermarket truck suspensions. These are what i use.

After 190,000km your shocks will be past due for replacement. I changed the Toyota TEMS shocks on my Grande at 140,000km with aftermarket shocks. A set of adjustable Toyota TEMS shocks cost about $2400. A set of top quality Bilsteins is about $1000. If you still want adjustability, a set of Tough Dog adjustable shocks is also about $1000.

Holy sweet mother of heaven high above - that is ridiculous... I hope that buys 4 shocks and not just the rear ones...

Oh, and because I am such a nice, caring kinda guy, before you Grande owners ask where the in-cabin switch is located that will adjust your tyre pressures I will save you the time by letting you know that you will actually need to get your ass of your leather-clad seat and do it manually.

Or you could try paying someone... It is amazing what I will do for $5...

Really? Adjust tyre pressures manually? How uncouth!
