  • Standard Service 2008 D4D

    Guys, got my Prado now and want to learn to be self sufficient. This means doing my own regular servicing.

    Can someone please tell me what I need to change every 10,000km

    I'm thinking oil, which kind is best and how much oil? Filter? Fuel filter/s? Sump plug washer?

    Where can I buy these parts?

    What else? Is there a written list I can follow regularly? I have 110,000 service due and it has been very well maintained to date. Rather than give Toyota $1000+ I figure I can do it

    You expert guidance will be appreciated.

    If it was my vehicle and i had just bought it i would be doing all the oils (manual or auto?) brake fluid and coolant maybe , and all the filters
    I am not very trusting of service books (been in the trade to long i suppose unless you know the people that have been servicing it )so i like to know were i am at

    Otherwise Delo 400 engine oil , genuine oil filter and do this every 5000k (not 10K) or 6 months religiously
    Main Fuel filter under the bonnet every 20k and don't forget the one underneath

        I agree with Bear63. Oil changes every 5000kms on all diesel engines

          Another vote for doing dropping all the oils and starting a fresh with the date you know they have been done at. It can also give you an indication on how healthy she actually is eg color of oil and any material in the oils or around the drain plug etc.

          What oil you use will have differing opinions on here but at the end of the day if you stick with the big names you cant go wrong. Stick with a 15W-40 grade for the engine and a good oil company catalog will guide you through the rest once you put in your cars info and drive train. I personally use Castrol and use this site for the recommended oils and housing capacities;

          http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/Cast...ategoryId=3000

          As allot of others do here, I service the engine oil every 5,000km and fuel filter every 10,000km. Diffs, tranny, transfer get done every 6 months (again this is my preference). Try to get into the habit of greasing your uni joints in the drive shaft every second service. Just a couple of pumps will do it ensuring you don't go overboard with grease coming out everywhere. Allot of what I do is a bit of habit, potentially OCD, and also what I put the car through. If your driving it allot off road, with dust, mud, water etc etc then a regular service/ check regime is a must. A good example is the air filter change out. Dependent on what its been through it can still stay serviceable for quite a long time, where as a good dirt road trip over a couple 1000ks can see it being changed out in no time. Soccer mum type of city driving is allot less wear and tear so its easier for the car the reach a 10,000km service with better conditions, cleaner fuel stations etc etc.

          Toyota genuine parts and filters are as good as you want and you know they will fit your car. There are other companies that sell aftermarket kits (I use Donaldson 4wd kits) but do your research and ensure what you are putting on the car is up to Toyota standard eg filter specs/ microns etc. Allot of the genuine Toyota stuff is on ebay but there are other sites that sell specifically Toyota parts;

          www.justoyota.com.au/
          www.autopartswarehouse.com/toyota~rep.html

          I could go on for an age on the different parts that will need to be looked at at different services. Good thing to get yourself is the service schedule book if you dont already have it and it should let you know what you are looking at. Just keep in mind you will have the timing chain ready for replacement at 150,000km. this is a good time to change out for fresh long life Toyota coolant and think about the water pump too. Would also be worth mentioning replacing the injectors once you read up on the KD engine common faults.

          Safe to say there is a few things to learn about but the best part is getting to know the car better each time you do it. Finally this site has been the best source of knowledge ive seen since owning mine. There are plenty of people that have done what your planning to do more than a few times over and are pretty happy to help out. Good luck with it in any case, 2008 was a good year

          Cheers,

            I agree do Oil and filter every 5K and it doesn't take to long.

            I use Delo 400 after plenty of reading here and I use genuine filters.

            I do my own maintenance as I got a quote from Toyota here for a minor service and they said about $450. I bought the Toyota 120 series manual and will do it all myself.

            Make sure you grease the prop shafts as well. (you will need a grease gun)
