  • Recommended set of TD D4D 120 spares for a big outback trip

Getting to the pointy end now in preparing for our lap of Oz. I'm now putting together all my tools/recovery gear/spares etc that I want to carry with us at all times. Would love to know if anyone else has done this exercise and have a pretty exhaustive list of what you have. Also, any tips on a one stop shop to get them all? Ie autobarn, supercheap or does it have to be Toyota?

Hoses, clamps, fuses, fluids etc I guess, do I just go to autobarn and say "give me a full set of everything?" And hand over my life savings?

    Pre trip check the rig front to back. Consider dropping all the diff, gearbox and transfer case oils. Have the car serviced before you leave. Check over all the hoses and belts. If anything is even suspect then change it out. Most city/ large town centres will have oils and filters and any other consumable you will need so there is no real need to carry a full workshop in the back. More remote areas I carry the following;
    -Spare belt and radiator hoses
-oil, fuel, secondary fuel and air filters
    - mini blade fuse kit for the car fuse box and a kit covering the larger blade fuses for accessories.
    - tool kit containing socket set (metric & imperial with some deep drives and extensions), spanner roll, fencing pliers, needle nose pliers, Stanley knife, hammer, hacksaw, cheater bar, philips and flat head screw driver, 12v soldering iron+ solder, multimeter, Allen key set, small led torch, multi tool, cold chisel.
    - wd40
    - coolant
    - engine oil
    - steel putty
    - wire
    - duck tape
    - zip ties
    - tyre repair kit
    - hidden spare keys
    - canvas tarp
    - high lift jack and base plate
    - large recovery kit
    - maxtrax
    - shovel
    - gloves
    - small axe
    - compressor
    - jumper cables
    - workshop manual

Filters oils and every other consumable can be found either online, at an auto store or a dealer. All depends on if your brand loyal or strict with what you use on the rig. Most importantly is having a personal skill set to be able to use the tools you select and are confident to carry out repairs and servicing/ preventative maintenance when you need to. Use time in cities and towns to ensure anything out of your capability is attended to by a pro. You will get into a routine of pre starting the vehicle every day and checking things over so you can identify issues before they become problems.

Best of luck with your trip

This has been covered a number of times previously, here is a link to my list from Madigans trip, remember that is probably the most remote 4wd trip that can be done in Australia so you may not need everything I took.

And a few other threads that have covered this, and a few links to more threads contained in these threads.

            No dramas mate,
Forgot to mention a filter strap that connects to your 1/4 drive and get yourself a bag of replacement washers for the sump plug too.

Like AJ120 suggested, check out those other threads as I'm sure more seasoned tourers have a few more tricks than me.

In my view this is a never ending circle, more spares especially fluids, = more weight , more probability of breakdown.

I'm a bit biased since the only remote breakdown I've ever been involved with was suspension failure about 30 km past purni bore, and this was certainly due to overloading.

Sure if you a doing madigans line, you need to be well prepared. How remote is your lap? In my view this informs your list of spares.

I think there's lots of times when RACV total care might be the best spare!

Hey Heath74. I hear you. For me, a big part of it is knowing I will have the mrs and three kids in the car, and as long as the car is running, we are safe. Obviously the full blown premium RACQ coverage is number 1 on the list.

Having just returned from a lap of OZ i can give you a bit of info hopefully.
                  I took
                  Random spare fuses
                  New drive belt
                  Fuel filter
                  spare rear shock
                  small tin oil
                  LOTS of cable ties
                  Misc tools etc.

I wanted to take more but even towing a camper trailer we ran out of room and weight was a major issue that i wanted to minimise.
In the end i did not need to use any spares as Australia is not as remote as you think unless you are going to be a trailblazer and 99% are not. even the most remote roads we took you still seem to pass 1-2 cars a day.
In saying that i needed a new engine in Perth so no matter how many spares i took i dont think a new short motor would have been on the list......
So check your oil pick up screen prior to leaving!Dont expect Toyota to do it at a service.

Have fun and enjoy yourself- best time i have ever had travelling around this big country!
                  Jealous much....

Best tip I have been given from a Pradopointer was to get a Repco cabin air filter. They seem a tighter filter than the standard Toy ones so heaps better at keeping out the dust when on dirt roads. Found that I just left the air on "outside" mode and no dust. Put the Toy one aside for returning to the black top at home.

Geez benny, I hope we don't that kind of trouble on our trip!
Mule that's a great tip, let us know the part number if you get a chance, the amount of dust we get inside our cabin is crazy! Might as well have windows down

                            Hi Guys,

Here is the link to the filter part number - post #46

                            http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...o+cabin+filter

It works great in the dust, but does slow the airflow a little.

Here is the list of spares our resident mechanic wanted when we crossed the Simpson last year.

                            • A bottle of transmission oil
                            • A bottle of engine oil
                            • 2 cans of degreaser
                            • A can of WD40
                            • A can of break clean
                            • fan belts
                            • water hoses
                            • coolant – change if not done in the last 12 months
                            • a set of wheel studs
                            • a tyre repair kit
                            • Front hub nut socket
                            • Two CV boots
                            • Spare headlight globes
                            • air filter
                            • fuel filter

Some may think it a little excessive, but he didn't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere without the right parts

We did share some spares between some cars

                            Cheers

OK i was a bit different and did not want to take everything but the kitchen sink while i dont doubt any of the above i do question some of the overkill you see these days

Coolant - Why? take enough water to put in for an emergency you should be taking water anyway
Oil - I took 1 litre for top up why would you take 7 litres if you need to top up with 7 litres of oil you have a bigger problem
Spare oil filter why would i change the oil in the middle of the desert it can go 1000k over the service to get to a town
Spare sump plug washers - why are you changing the oil
Multimeter ok if you want to spend the money but a 5 dollar test light will probably be just as good for roadside work
Solder, maybe but you can strip 2 wires and join them together if you have to
CV boot - you can still drive
As for people who take spare shocks dont get me started unbelivable as it may seem you can drive a car with a broken shock ( i say shock a broken front strut is another matter

I took pretty much the items as others have listed and the 2 that got used the most were duct tape and cable ties. If you do some good pre trip inspection and work you should have no problems. If you are taking large components on a trip they should have been changed out before you left, i have heard of people taking spare glow plugs!!

                              Essentials
                              Decent tools
                              Air filter
                              Fuel filter
Radiator hoses / Bit of heater hose
Change the belts (keep the old ones for spares)
                              Fuses
                              Electrical wire
                              A little bit of oil
Maybe some radiator concentrate to mix
                              Tyre repair kit

Keep in mind you are driving now one of the most common 4wd's in Australia and this old school weeks wait for parts is now over most places can get most parts within 3 days if you need it.

Please note the above comments are based on the fact that i designed my kit for a temp repair to get me down the road to the next town where it would be looked at
