  • squeal on start up.

gday pradopointers, bought a 03 model glx 120 with the 4L v6 a few mths ago, 200 000klms on the clock, full service history, last service at 200k all belts were checked & found to be fine, something ive noticed is after rain, occasionally you get that loud belt squeal, lasts about 3secs & only happens after rain, maybe 7 times in last 3 mths.

could this be purely a water making the belt slip? or an indicator of overtightening? belt wear? no apparent cracks i can see. thanks in advance.

    cheers

Water will make the belt squeal for 3sec.

The belt could be old as well not helping. Put on a newy, tell us how you go!

when you put new belts on put some rubber grease on the inside of the belt, to stop sweaking

This would be my suggestion. Our V6 gives a random squeal of the idler some mornings.
Seems to be after some water crossings or dusty convoy driving, possible it's moisture or dust on the belt?
The bearings are Toyota specific so not available from your local bearing shop.
However one of the clever Pradopointers some time ago, came up with a bush that could retro fit to a suitable bearing to repair the idler.
Now days the full idler kits are on ebay from an Aussie supplier.
          Cheers

Quick update, serpentine belt brand new, also replaced the 3 idler pulleys and tensioner pulley, still did it this morning, so what does that leave? Dont leave air con on so assuming its not that, any opinions on what next?

Doesn't the alternator have a sprag clutch in them (inside the pulley)? this will make the exact noise you are talking about , we have done heaps on Hilux's , usually nobody has the tools to change the clutch so its a new alternator

Edit... i checked this arvo , they don't have one , have a good look at the belt alignment

Have a close look at the belt tensioner pulley assembly. From memory it has an arrow on it showing what angle it should be at.
Apart from that you will need to take off the belt and check each individual pulley for movement or damage.

Ived got the same problem and have been through it all.I think I might just have to replace the tensioner spring and see what happens

this has been discussed many times before . you need to use a genuine toyota belt . after markets squeal even from new for some reason . its not your bearings , they do not squeal. and yes you can replace your pulley bearings from cbc bearings without having to buy the toyota tensioner . ive done it twice . the worst thing you can do is drive the v6 through muddy water it destroys the bearings within minutes and will cost about $200 -$300 each time you do it . the bearings will keep going but make increasing noise . i drove from birdsville to sydney with shot bearings without problems , so dont panic but stay out of big muddy puddles or ploughing through anything at speed .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

Thanks kav, yep, Im aware the bearings won,t squeal like that, definately the belt, my main concern is a seized bearing or close to seized taking a couple secs occasionally to start rotating, thus dragging the belt over a stationary pulley, just gonna speed up the wear process. No offence to any mechanics here but im a bit tired of half assed jobs.

It's doing the same thing mine did . My mechanic replaced the old squealing belt with a new aftermarket job , it did exactly what yours is doing . We replaced it with a new genuine Toyota one and problem solved instantly . Don't know why but it worked . The after market job may have been sitting around for a while or they my use different rubber compound . No amount of lube or old school tricks worked on the other belts .
