I would say no, a 285 will rub on the Upper control arm (UCA). That would be a very unusual size for a Prado, any reason you want to go that size?
A 265/70/17 which is a very common size on a Prado fits with little or no issues, this will have the same rolling diameter as the 285/65, so apart from a bit of width will give the same result.
You will need a spacer to fit the spare wheel.
If you really must have the 285's you will need after market UCA's or rims with a different offset. There are stacks of tyre threads with loads of info on all the various brands and sizes commonly fitted.

Hey plugga.
I am running 275/65/17 BFG AT's.
These are the largest legal tyre you can put on a Prado...
Well in qld at least anyways, Im not sure about other states.
In comparison with a 265/65/17, they visually appear to be a good inch larger in diameter.
Assosiated problems with going a larger tyre are-
Speedo not accurate, slower take off and less revs at highwayspeed.
Most frustrating for me is that the Prado has less instant lift off, like when you want to climb rocks and slow speed work.
Ill be going back to 265/65's next time.
Thats what the Prado is geared for.
The speedo being inaccurate with larger tyres is not the same on all models, on a 2004 they will put the speedo out. However on later models like my 2009 going to 265/70/17's has corrected the speedo to be perfect. I never have worked out when the change came but 2007 or 2008 I reckon.
Cheers Andrew

I have the 265/70/17 and at 110 km/h my 2009 vehicle is showing 109 km/h. Can't complain about that.
