  • Toyota Australia Parts Mark-Up!

Why are parts through Toyota Australia outrageously expensive compared to what they can be obtained for overseas? I know there is GST and higher overheads through wages, smaller market etc, but how can this account for over a 271% increase in the price of a 120 series fuel pump O-ring I priced with a dealership in Sydney compared to buying the exact same item on a Toyota parts website in the USA? Even with the hefty postage costs often you still end up ahead - just doesn't make sense. I was talking with a customer at the Toyota parts place and he was complaining of the same thing.

Wow, that's a fair price difference. Who are these suppliers you speak of?

For panels/ lights etc either All Crash or SSS auto parts and for electrical Premier Auto Parts who only sell wholesale only to stores like General Bearings, Repco and a few others.
For lights All Crash and SSS offer either Non Genuine if availiable or Genuine as an option. I know late ZZE122 Corolla headlights lights List for around $600 each from Toyo but Aftermarket can be picked up for $68 + GST.
I did get a price of Genuine Prado 120 lights for $220 +GST

Toyota probably source all of their parts of the big Petrolium companies...
It seems the are both consistently raising their prices!!

                Why do they do it?

                Because they can.

At the end of the day, its about profit, not being nice to people.

Lots of people, in lots of industries have discovered its worth the effort to order via the interweb. Remember Gerry Harvey bleating on about how its so unfair that consumers are buying electronic goods direct from overseas and not from the likes of him? It seems its ok for Gerry and his mates to bring ship loads of stuff back from China and sell at a mark up of 1000% or more, but its a different story when the end consumer figures out how to get rid of all the middle men. Kind of ironic considering Gerry sold us the computers and insisted on the casualisation of the work force.

Ordering all sorts of stuff direct from from America is hurting local distributors so much, many have taken drastic measures to try to stop it. Suppliers in the USA have been told they can't ship direct to Australia. Websites like shipito.com got around that, but then many were forced not to take your order if payment is via an Australian credit card. On it goes.
