  • Toyota for Major service?

    Hi all,

I need to have the 80,000k service done on my 2008 120 D4D. (sheez, 30,000 in under 12 months, where have the k's gone!!)

It's a major service and I doubt any of the mechanics I've used so far (onto my 4th in the bayside area ) have the knowhow and possibly the diagnostic tools required to do it properly.
They all say they can do it but does a Toyota dealer have it over others when it comes to these major services where there's a lot of electrical diagnostics going on?

    Can anyone recommend someone ??
    Cheers, Leon

I didn't think there was much electrical stuff to be done unless there are fault codes.

I'll give my mechanic a call Leon and see what gear he now has for the diagnostics. (ex Motorama tech) and he's mobile so he comes to you...

I thought just about every decent spanner tech has a diagnostic tool these days.
Are u under warranty still? Sure take it to toyota.
Not under warranty? Stay the hell away from them!!!

Check your service book and make a list of what needs doing
Drop into a few mechanics and ask them about their recent experience on Prados.
Have a look thru their workshop. If its a messy unorganised brothel, walk awy.
Have a look at their oil storage system. If thats a mess walk away as well.

If a mechanic doesnt display good housekeeping then i doubt you could trust him to be anal with your car.

Ive used this site for a few years for servicing my Prado and BT50.
Dont book through the site but rather ring them and tell them you got details and price from website.
Got a 60k service done through Repco mechanic near work for $500 on BT50, $950 from Mazda.

For your D4D from $400 to $500 for 80K service.

im not affiliated in anyway, but i have taken my prado and my older 4runner to Athena Automatics at Tingalpa in the past and they have always done a really good job, tony that works there is very up front and honest and wont rip you off. They're a Repco authorised service centre

Andrew, you know, Exactly! It's amazing how many people still think magic happens when the car is serviced.

It is important to find a good smart technician, many grease monkeys are doing the job by accident - eg, left school early and got an apprenticeship..... The stealerships often take what they can get.

Thanks for the reply's and PM's guys.
There was a fault code last month and I took it to Southside Toyota at Morningside and I was impressed with his answers when I quizzed him about the injector issues etc... that fault code has been sorted quickly, efficiently and cheaply!!
My last experience with a dealership was with my 90 series and after that I swore never to use a dealer again... but after trying random and recommended mechanics from Wynnum to Capalaba I'm lost for what non dealer mechanics can and can't do??
Mostly nice people, clean workshops, nicely kitted out cars and fourbys... lots of industry talk... but attention to detail and the ability to admit when they don't know something seem to be lacking

I guess my main concern is to have a good look at the injector issues and feel confident that the whole car has been given a good looking over.

I'll look into all your suggestions and thanks again.
                Cheers, Leon

After 6 years of servicing a couple of my Prado's I highly recommend Ultra Tune, as they have excellent mechanics with all the diagnostic tools needed for a lot less than the dealership and the service is very friendly and customer focused

                    Hi All,

just had my 80k service done, changed dealers due to probs with local dealer, cost $890, and they over filled my oil, was one of the reoccurring things that pissed me off with other dealer, dont Toyota know how to fill oil to correct level?

                    Cheers

                          Hi All,

Would faulty engine mounts cause rough idle, had cold start test, conclusion was injectors ok, within spec, told maybe engine mount, but I have the update mounts, but if it was a faulty mount would it rough idle all the time, mine is intermittent, but more noticeable when cold, had rough idle b4 & had 2 injectors replaced.

                          Cheers

                              Hiya Steve,
I have the same symptoms, and still its undiagnosed. Took it to Toyo a few times under warranty and also outside warranty and they have been unable to replicate the issue. They suggested replacing engine mounts (as I had suggested it may be) at a cost of around $1000. Keep me updated on your progress....
I'm maybe considering purchasing the mounts from overseas and having a mechanic fit them for me
                              Cheers,
