  • Have you ever broken down in your Prado?

I have a workshop full of tools and yes some of you think I'm a tool too
Just trying to work out what I can leave behind when we travel.
If you have broken down, as in the vehicle stopped & could not be driven, not a failure or a leak.

    Talking Prado's:

What was your vehicle? what year? Klm's? Petrol or diesel?

Where were you? How far out major town? How far from home?

    What stopped you?

    How did you fix it?

    Any other relevant info?

Not sure why you exclude leaks? I put a hole in my Radiator in arguably the most remote place in Australia, halfway across Madigans line in the Northern Simpson desert. I had coolant with me but it was 4 days drive to civilization and we had limited water so if not fixed it was not able to be driven, it was also 47 degrees at the time

Fixed it using the magic of silver seal.

There are NO recovery services on Madigans, get yourself out or abandon your vehicle. Much of this trip there was no track and we were pushing through burnt out scrub pushing over the dead burnt bushes, which caused the hole.

      2009 120 D4D with 60k on the clock.

      Cheers Andrew

Not excluding, just don't want to hear about a transfer case seal leaking or slow leaks, which are failures, but not necessarily stop you. A small radiator leak that s top up able is not a break down, if it poured str8 out then that's what we need to hear about.

I carry kneed it, 2 part epoxy, can be used to fix things like radiators & holes in fuel tanks etc.
Also it is easy to cut & roll up the damaged part of he core once you know exactly how the radiator works & what in there. I presume you do.

        Thank you.

Just remembered another one, which again was a leak but this the fuel tank. Just driven across the Tanami and filled up with diesel at Halls Creek (over $2 a litre) and found the rear tank leaking caused by a stone stuck between the fuel tank and the stone guard.

Local Toyota dealer didn't want to know about me so had to fix it parked on the footpath. After draining the fuel which is a long story that I won't go into I made a leather washer from a tab on a jacket and screwed in a self tapper. Cleaned with Shellie then added metal putty.

Lasted 8 months before it started to leak, by which time I was we'll and truly home and removed tank and welded the hole up.

2005 120 with 60k on the clock, 2800kms from home.

          Cheers Andrew

              Nice.
I remove my fuel tank guards, bash them out, clean out rocks a few times a year, I think it helps prevent them rubbing through.
Nice idea for the fix, screw it!

My old man ran a radiator repair shop for 20 years, so yeah I thought of about 50 ways to fix the leak in about 5 seconds given the severity and the remoteness of where we were, the silver seal was brilliant so didn't need to do anymore.

Thought of another one, once again a leak, 2009 Prado at 11k. Have a look here for details http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...spat-it-at-11k Rather than me type it all again.

had it not of been a warranty job I would have fixed it in a similar way to the fuel tank, tech screw and do a better job at home. Never really did resolve what caused it, but no problem since. Only a hundred odd K from home.

And yeah, I regularly check for stones on the fuel tank gaurds now

                Cheers Andrew

Sort of seems like that doesn't it They were all small holes, but of course small holes can lead to big problems.

Just remembered a bloke came into the workshop for a new tyre , he had ripped the side out of his , so he got a fire going and burnt some holes through the tyre , stitched it together with some wire , put some sort of patch on the inside , threw a tube in and drove 200 k into town !! , he took it slow and easy but he got home !!

My ignition barrel locked up and I couldn't turn the key!

                        Most frustrating thing EVER!

Called RACV and he spent 2 hrs pulling the dash apart and then started with screwdriver

Also ripped out my fuel changeover solenoid (stupidly positioned on the 90 series) so it started pumping fuel out onto the track. Lost about 60ltr of fuel before i worked out what the issue was. Ended up cable tying the fuels hoses up and driving out...know for next time lol

Closest I've come is coming home from Fraser this year. Last day on the island the 150 sounded a bit funny when it started, didn't think too much about. Stayed in Harvey Bay that night, wasn't too happy the next morning, so coming home I left it running for most of the day as we were smashing Km's through Qld and NSW. We stopped at Moree for food and let the kids have a good play, then it didn't want to start at all. We had established that both batteries were fine but the starter motor wasn't happy. A quick phone call to the old man for some advice and also to ####, a few love taps with the Ball Pein Hammer and she started. Unfortunately this was repeated a few times on the way home, but we got there. Gave the engine a good bath with degreaser and the high pressure and it hasn't missed a beat since. This was about 96,500 Km's, diesel auto 150. it's due for its 100 k service in the next week or so, so I dare say we'll have a good look then...
                            150 with stuff bolted on!

Rear airbag blew up in the dunes at Robe. The only way out was up the same hill where the airbag blew where the axle was undergoing full articulation. I had to get under the car to remove the airbags before it made more damage to the axle.

                              What I needed was:
2 bottle jacks (needed redundancy in case one broke and also needed a 2 stage lift, 1 jack from BIL's Prado)
1 hi-lift base for one jack (from kind stranger who stopped to help out)
1 maxtrax turned upside down to use one end as the base for the 2nd jack
2 spare tyres stacked (to chock under AJ120's side steps in case the sand shifted and takes both jacks with it while I was under the Prado, 1 spare from BIL's Prado)
1 SST to remove the airlines
1 flat screwdriver to remove clip above airbags
4 sets of maxtrax to aid traction up the hill (1 set from kind stranger, 1 set from BIL)
