          Im thinking TINT.

You, your missus and the kid will use it all day everyday, no matter where you are or what your doing.
We really notice our tint... when we have the windows down... Quick get those windows up they say!!!
In saying that, if you get a light tint or cheap tint you will regret it mate.

Although it wasn't the first thing I did, once I got it I wondered why it took me so long. I'm talking about a side awning (which of course needs a roof rack).
It's great when touring, and makes a good cover for overnight camps etc. Now that we have a newborn, it is especially handy at the beach or rest areas with no shade trees so we can always have some shade for feeds. I also put some LED strip lights along the main support so we have lighting at night. I don't have to set up the awning for the lights to be usable - I can just flip the roll back.

Compressor and recovery gear. For a grand you should be able to get a compressor (I've had a $79 Bushranger for about 8years now), some Max Trax, snatch strap and some shackles and maybe even a hand winch.

                Tint.

them some MSA Canvas seat covers.

them some sand grabber floor mats.

i know it doesn't make it 'yours' as much, but you got a 4 Year old.

Yep, first thing I got for the Prado was a set of Sandgrabbers. Especially handy to collect those spills that 4yr old seem to do more often than none. Then a recovery kit and a tyre deflator and compressor.

I accept you $1000 and as I have most of what has been said to date I would put it towards my lift kit :-)

Seriously though I agree with Drew, I got tinting first as my 95 is also my daily driver.

Fridge and a means to power it (might need to look at 2nd hand stuff to stay under budget though). Cold beer may not solve any of your other problems in life, but it'll make them a whole lot more bearable!

I've got two rug rats under 6 and we do similar to you. I'd suggest Rear seat covers, floor mats, and cargo barrier. Cargo Barrier was the first thing we fitted. Feel much safer now when loaded up for camping. Can now load all the way to the roof. Previously I've kept loads below seat height, but I've had to do a few emergency stops (roos, idiot drivers etc) when loaded up and stuff has come into the passenger cabin. Scary stuff.

Our Seatcover is currently an old double sheet but proper covers are next on the list. Decent floor mats are good too. Its amazing the crap the kids manage to leave behind - constantly finding rotten apple cores under my seat!

Ours came with Front and Rear Tint and Dual batteries already installed, and the tint is a highly underated addition. Especially on long trips when the kids fall asleep in the sun.

Have fun - the list is endless as I am finding out... Stay away from this site, it just makes the list longer

Maybe not in priority order but shade when camping is needed and side awnings are so easy to use. My #1 favourite thing.

                              Side awning. $200
You only need a set of roof racks to mount it and they can cost as little as $100
Fridge although you can get away with an esky and ice for a couple of days
Dual batteries, yes, but only if you have power drain items like a fridge
                              Tint, for everyday coolness
Maxtrax. Your stockie will get bogged a lot in sand.
Save the rest for diesel and go away more often
