    [QUOTE=Hutch;418717] Smoke not good.....[QUOTE]

x2. You do realise they are two different beasts? 07 = KD-FTV (common rail direct fuel injection) 05=1KZ-TE indirect injection. I've the latter. If you don't mind getting anywhere fast they're great little diesel engines. Re con exhange injectors @$450 plus fitting for the latter. 1KD -FTV@$2500 plus fitting plus all the other associated extra servicing costs. Like someone said that can buy you a lot of petrol!!

A noisy D4D when cold? Sounds to me like it may be the dreaded D4D rattle, lots of reading here: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...e-in-D4D-Prado

As for white smoke on start up, may be unburnt fuel as a result of the injector issue? Either way, alarm bells ringing for this particular vehicle.

Yeah Ive done a fair bit of research on both models. Im lucky enough to work for a major auto parts supplier so injectors are substantially cheaper for me but im not interested in buying a shit box either.

Looking at getting a Prado as it covers off everything I need in a vehicle. 4x4, tow the boat and plenty of room for the little ones. (Currently have a 2011 Kia Optima Platinum and a V8 Jeep)

What is the major cause of the white smoke? Im thinking injectors?

As for the 1KZ -TE what is the fuel consumption like?

If I read this properly "" Checked the log books and on the dot every 10k from day one up to the 160k - 180k where the pages were torn out but no stamps on the butts. after that to the end of the book all good "" If its been serviced and stamped properly the butts are the part that is stamped for proof of service. Anybody can rip the pages out along the perforated lines, this means nothing. Unless you can find out who it was serviced by and see the printout of all the services I wouldn't touch it. I will not and never have bought a second hand vehicle with out log books, AND service records etc. Smoke is not a good sign at all. I have neighbours all around me with diesel vehicles and none of them blow smoke on start up or when driving off and one of them the pajero DID is coming up towards 300thou now. I may have read your reply wrong but if it hasn't got stamps with dates, signatures etc I'd walk UNLESS you can proof of servicing.........As most on here know I love the V6 but every one to their own choice and if diesel is what your after like anything really check it over and if some thing doesn't feel right it probably isn't.......Cheers Steve

You're right, as mentioned there have been three versions of injectors for the 1KD-FTV (original ones aren't listed by Toyota anymore). The white smoke is oil leaking into the cylinders - and when it runs, the reverse happens.

IF everything else checks out mechanically - then get the seller to: 1) replace the injectors, pipes and fuel filter or 2) Knock $5K off the price and get the work done yourself via qualified diesel fitter.

Don't trust the "service center" on this, or the "good faith feed back readings". Don't get me wrong, even though I've spent the $$$ on long engine, looked after (beyond the book service) an it should go another 100K KM's easy.

I've found a good mini, Subaru and now Toyota mechanics that I will deal with - My Subaru guy knows that it is the wife's bus, so will "just do" all the "extra" things for safety EVERY service, and we have an understanding that he "just does it".

The Toyota mechanics I've found, same thing.

My personal opinion (vehicles seem to cost more in Tassie), if this is priced more than $25K - then walk away.

Evirx4 hasten slowly. I would be reluctant to buy that one. You need an independent check of the injectors and the oil pick up screen. White smoke is bad.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

After a good long talk with one of my customers who is a diesel mechanic we have ruled out the 07 model completely. Going to have him do the once over on the 05 model - fingers crossed!

evlrx4..me thinks, et al that was a good choice. I'd have only gone there if they'd have knocked @5k off the price. I find it odd how sales dealers know nothing about cars/there products, it's a sad indictment of today's society. I used to sell cheap wine and even then we had to sit tests to learn all about the different wines for customers! The only bad thing to come out of this (?) is some geezer with bugger all research will go along, buy it off the zitty sales dealer who will rub hands in glee as it's now off the lot. Said geezer in a few months off will be spewing on the Bruce Hwy & have to relieve himself eventually of @5k, then bad mouthing Toyota and Prado for the rest of his life! Kudos to you, you did the research took a little advice and moved onto better things... the 1KZ-TE. You won't be disappointed with it(?). Take it easy, change oil and filters every 5K and you will have a very happy diesel motor for many years. I get the exchange injectors just to give it a little extra vazoom, a 2.75/3" A/M exhaust and you'll be fine.

Just $5K? I reckon it will go the full monty, looking at least $12K in my case. Then again a long motor from Toyota is $12 on its own!

I was quoted $10,500 for a long motor in SA. Having said that mines costing $18,000. Long motor, turbo + install in Kununurra.

Ouch - I guess I got of a few $$ lighter than you, $12K for a re-build, new injectors (big shout to Baileys), new fuel pump, new water pump - 2 year warranty, on injectors and motor (40K KM's/2 year) - but at least for this transplanted Canuck - both mechanics and engine re-builders are in Hobart.

We had discussed briefly getting a second hand motor from a wrecker in QLD - but the "warranty" would be useless to me....

No actually my new motor has only cost the price of extended new car warranty. The best money I have ever spent! You would be very silly if offered not to take it. The hire car is costing a fortune but hey at least I'm still travelling the Kimberley's in a Toyota.

Thanks for all the help and advice guys. Greatly appreciated.
Had the 05 model checked out by one of my customers that happens to be diesel mechanic/4x4 shop owner. Other than needing a new battery he said it was in imaculate condition all round. So fingers crossed I will become a Prado owner this week!

                                Dear Dave,
I had a 2006 GXL until recently, just clocked over 160k and was serviced three weeks ago! On my way home from Murray Bridge last Friday the rear engine seal blew ( just near Lenswood), I replaced 4liters of oil to get home and by the time I was near St Agnes the oil light cam on again when I called for a tow to get it to a garage too assess the problem! It had three time the oil level in the sump mainly because the injectors failed and pumped fuel into the sump via cylinders. Resulting $ quote was for $16000 for a replacement low kilo motor from NSW. This vehicle was bought with Toyota extended warranty that expired Oct this year and the vehicle had done a little over 12000km over the 150000warranty coverage. If you have unlimited financial reserves they are a lovely vehicle and great fun. 0421 288879 I know drive a low mileage commodore acclaim and my dream vehicle is traded and waiting a new engine at North Point !
