Buzzing sound coming from transmission... Normal???

I had the ignition to "on" position without the engine running and I could hear a buzzing, similar to an electric fuel pump, coming from underneath. I've had 120's since 2007 and never noticed this before. On closer inspection, It is not coming from the tanks but is coming from the transmission and there is a slight vibration I can feel with my hand on the transmission sump.
Do they normally do this and I have just not noticed it before or is this a sign of my wallet getting lighter??
If you have a petrol 5spd auto 120, can you turn on your ignition and tell me if you have a very slight buzzing sound?

Interesting. I've noticed a similar buzzing noise when ignition is on - but I've had no gauge issues and its a 2008 D4D. Be keen to hear suggestions...

We noticed a similar intermittent noise when finally making it to Uluru. It would start up when the engine was running. Hubby opened the bonnet but couldn't hear it, so we figured that the engine running drowned out the sound. We could only hear it from the inside of the car. It was Sunday and the mechanical repairs place was closed, so we pressed on and continued further north, keeping our fingers crossed the whole time. In Alice Springs the noise was gone, but we did buy an extra fanbelt just in case and pressed on further. Thankfully the fanbelt wasn't needed and the car (2003 V6 GXL) didn't miss a beat for the remaining weeks of the trip. We had, however, worked out by then that it was the new Samsung charger plugged into the port on the dashboard (which by then was also whistling with only the accessories turned on). I hope your noise is as simple to fix as ours was. Good luck.

Oh, and I have also recently noticed my fuel needle behaving badly in recent months.

My noise is definitely under the car and would not be able to hear it with the engine running. Its something humming in the tranny as I can feel vibrating when I place my hand on the pan. Its running like a top but I'm pretty sure this noise was never there.

So this is with ignition on but motor not running ??? Was your tranny warm, hot (eg running temp) or cold (first thing engine not even started) ??? Just so I can tell when to check for you....Cheers Steve

Yes that's right, Ignition on, motor not running. First noticed it when it was stone cold. Then went for a drive and got it up to operating temperature. Shut it down, and turned the key past acc back to on position again, motor not running and still making the buzzing sound. Thanks Steve, Appreciate your time to check. Doesn't seem to be affecting anything, I'm sure its normal.

Kind of sounds like an AFL siren, but a lot quieter.

Mine also makes a split second buzzing that descends in pitch, like a tiny electric motor turning off when I accelerate for the first time after starting it.

Thanks DISHoh, maybe its normal and I just havnt noticed it before? I havnt noticed any strange noises when I accelerate as you have mentioned tho, just the killawasps...

Hi Steve just checked mine and yes makes the same sound as DISHoh has mentioned. This is cold from last night hasn't been started this morning. Funny, I have heard that noise before and always thought it was the fuel pump priming up but after realizing the sound doesn't actually stop lol.....Anyway Steve sounds like you have nothing to worry about in regards to the sound. Mine is an 05 so it does have the 5 speed auto also........I cant hear it with engine running as its too noisy under there........Cheers Steve

Just checked my dad's car, same specs as mine but '05 (mine's actually '06) and it does it as well. Hot tranny after 2 hrs driving

I'll officially put it on my do not worry about list.
